    I got my QST Sat and read that - Congrats to both! Both of the folks really had good projects, but I was surprised at only 2 folks entering? Did I get that right?

    Would be nice if someone offered those Challenge winners in kit form.
    Doug Hendricks (qrpkits.com) did with the very first one, the 40m QRP
    SSB/CW transceiver, the MMR-40. It was a so-so rig, the brass screw in hand
    wound coil made for a funky PTO. OTOH is was stable enuf for use
    after warming up. :)

    It would be especially good for those who don't have the skills,
    TOOLS, or time for metal working, etching PC boards, enclosures, etc.
    Yes, I fully realize that "kitting" a design is a huge project and you have
    to sell quite a few to even break even. I get that.

    Still, if QST claims they are great designs, it would be nice if they put their
    money where their mouths are (not likely) and gave SOME financial or
    even volunteer support to kitting these Challenge Winners.

    Homebrewing is an increasingly difficult task and those that manage to accomplish their construction project are to be highly commended.
    To build a transceiver that is up to the modern commercial capabilities is a daunting task. Even a simple unit is a difficult endeavor.
    My latest project was a magnetic loop antenna with remote tuning capability. It is capable of over 500W operation and can tune the 80/75, 60 and 40 meter bands. Along with the loop I built a SWR bridge that will not radiate a detectable signal when tuning up. It is exceptionally sensitive and can detect where an antenna is resonant when it is 4 Mhz away from the tuning point. It doesn't do that well on a magnetic loop though since the loop is very high Q and very narrow banded. These were all fun but it also showed that my junk box was virtually non-existant and I had to buy a bunch of stuff. I did get to increase my tool chest abit.
    Anyway it is great that N8ZRY accomplished a his goal and he should be extermely satisfied.

    Thank you for your kind words. Needless to say, it was extremely challenging! So much was going on to the very last minute that the radio was only the air for only 1 day before i handed it over to ARRL HQ. My background is in radar imaging systems, but developing a SSB transceiver is an entirely different challenge.

    If making the radio in a modular form was not challenging enough, Jim WA2EUJ was able to print it on one single board in 12 months. That is amazing!

    I received my QST yesterday and that was the first article I went for.

    As a homebrewer myself, I HEARTILY take my hat off to U for a truly outstanding project! Wish I could do my own PCBs, but I just use Perfboards and when I need shielding, use copper tape on the board. That is a very professional and FB project! WELL WELL DONE!
