That's not accurate. The Motorola TRBO system is a non-compliant implementation of DMR, which is a completely open standard. TRBO differs at Tier III, but that tier is the trunked system, and hams don't use trunking anyway. Roaming is part of Tier III, so only Motorola radios can automatically roam between Motorola repeaters. Most of the networking in the US uses the Rayfield C-Bridge, and that is only compatible with Motorola, and was in fact designed to overcome a Motorola-specific limitation on the number of repeaters that can be networked together.

All that said, there are other brands of DMR repeater, and they don't need any licence from Motorola, because they only do Tier II, which is what all ham systems use. The other brands of radio also only support Tiers I and II, and don't need any licence from Motorola.

IOW, ham systems are not Tier III, and it is the Motorola version of Tier III that is non-standard, not other brands.

If anyone is paying licencing fees to Motorola, they are doing it only so their customers can use their gear on commercial Motorola-based trunked systems. There are zero trunked systems on ham radio.

People steal intellectual property all the time.

Ask HP and Dell computer about all the tech created in China and similar that is exactly their stuff and they aren't getting a dime for it.

Good luck getting a settlement there either. The government turns a blind eye to it.

Its the same as all of these radios you see coming out that look exactly like ones we have here for a third of the cost. You think they are paying licensing fees? Nope.

hi, the solutios for this 3 different DIGITAL system? this:

For a month now, the IT-DMR working group, together with the managers of the bridges connected to the same network, made some remarks about the state of the DMR system development in Italy (and the world), and how the network is inserted Italian in the changing environment.

Numerous innovations in place, including the new collaboration between the IT-DMR Group Network and Brandmeister Italian Network.

based on technical evaluations, requested by users and validity of Brand Meister system rapidly evolving and widely supported, it was decided to carry out a migration-related Server IT-DMR systems, trying with this decision to also give for the first time a strong impulse to want to join forces to pursue a single digital project.

Here in Italy thanks to Brandmeister project 'already possible with a digital radio DMR communicate with other systems and then also talk to ham-radio using the D-Star and C4FM Fusion .... this in Italy !!!

In Germany will have the DMR + Plus, but here in Italy we have a network that communicates with ALL 3 three digital systems so DMR, D-Star and C4FM Yaesu.

That actually makes sense, because 220 is only a ham band in ITU Region 2 (N/S America), and the so-called 'New Radio' is being launched in Region 1 (Europe/Africa), where they don't have that band.
