I'm looking to buy a new HF/VHF radio. The type that is small, operates on HF, 6M
and maybe VHF. Similar to the Kenwood TS-480SAT, or Icom 706MKIIG
(although that one is discontinued) or Yaesu FT-897D, or similar moderately priced radios.

It just seems every dealer has the same price for these radios... within a dollar or two.
Sort of like they worked it out ahead of time.... not that they would do that, of course. ;-)

I've bought a lot of non-ham related things on and around Black Friday and was wondering
if any radios or ham gear ever goes on sale this time of year.

Has anyone heard of any upcoming Ham Radio Sales for Black Friday?

I've never heard of that but I guess anything's possible.

The prices are all similar because the factory charges all the dealers the same cost, so the only difference would be the "mark up" the dealers have to make in order to stay in business. The variations shouldn't be very much.

The dealers don't make a lot of money reselling ham gear. They always hope they can sell you some accessories, or anything else, where the profit margin might be a little bit higher. Similar to automobile dealers and sales; they don't make much on the car, but they hope to make that up with other stuff and that you'll return for service, where they can actually make some money.

I've known several car dealership owners over the years (who were also hams, that's why I knew them) and they all told me the same story: If not for accessories, extended warranties, and service, they'd all be bankrupt because the margin on the car sales isn't enough to keep them afloat.

I suspect radio dealers are in the same predicament.

Last Year HRO had a Black Friday sale that I think lasted for about ten days. The one special I remember for sure was Yaesu FT-450-AT's for $599.99 including shipping. Even though they were being closed out that was still the best price I ever saw on them. I see some guys asking more than that for them even now. When you figure that they were shipping them and taking credit cards, it is hard to believe that they were making much if anything on them.

There is really not that much markup in radios themselves, the accessories is where that comes in.

Hamcity also had price drop on VHF/UHF radios at black friday, but not too much, around $10 per model.

Figure out what radio and what accessories (mobile bracket, desk mic, programming software / cable, etc...) you want. Create a spreadsheet with these items and price them from each vendor. Be sure to include a row for shipping cost, if any. Sum up the columns and take the one with the lowest package price. If it is a bust, see if you can buy from multiple vendors and save a buck or two.

Some of them always have the cheapest radio and free shipping, but the accessories are much higher. Some have a reasonable price on the radio, but discount the accessories quite a bit. Be sure to see if they are throwing in the remote head kit, if you pick a radio that has that option.

Just wondering. If the on line porno sites break all sales records do they call it a Blue Friday ?
