Hey QRZ, I am looking for a 2 meter and 70cm dual band antenna that will be Chimney mounted. I am concerned with wind loading, I currently have a 2 meter antenna up that I have had no problems so im looking for a pretty compact antenna. to simply replace the 2m I have up there now.

Price is a concern of course =) Id like to keep it under 100 dollars or very close to it.

Any solid performers that you might recommend?

    Thanks for the input =)

I have the Tram 1481 / UVS-300 dual band antenna 8.3/11.7db gain I purchased from a dealer on ebay for under $100.00 bux under the sellers name of cqantenna. He also puts up for auction the smaller version Tram-1451?/Uvs-200?

If your not in a big hurry check with him occasionally and you will be able to pick up a good deal on a new antenna.

I put up a Jetstream Dual Band vertical and it seems to work well. Good enough for what I need. It is installed at 36 feet.

The price was right too :D

This is the model I use JETSTREAM

A "best of breed" in terms of both performance and durability, and also not expensive, is the Hustler: http://www.new-tronics.com/main/html/base_model_g6-270r.html

Built far better than Tram, Comet, Diamond, et al.

Strong antenna, handles high winds just fine, and low wind loading so a decent chimney should hold it.

Up at my old repeater site I had a $250 Diamond dual-bander and the Hustler G6-270 installed on the same tower, on opposite sides, up 70' above ground on a big hilltop. No snow or ice, but lots of wind, and the occasional big bird (even California Condors, which are fairly enormous, used to fly around there).

The Diamond broke in half within two years and became unusable. The Hustler didn't, and could have probably been there for 100 years, except I took it down to move the equipment.

The Hustler also cost a lot less!

    Arrow Antenna OSJ-146/440

I have the Arrow Antenna OSJ-146/440 - inexpensive, high quality, works well.

    Re: Chimney Mount

No one asked this so I will. Do you use the fireplace? If so, anything you mount to the chimney will become coated with soot. If that's the case, you may want to mount the antenna elsewhere.

Do you have a copy of the ARRL handbook?

For example, in the 2005 ARRL handbook on page 22.57 there is an excellent description of the simple construction of a dual band antenna for 146/446 MHZ.

Not only would this antenna design cost less that $20.00 in materials to actually construct, but I would also consider this particular design to be a solid performing antenna.

Yes I realize that I could simply provide and publish the actual construction details indicated in the ARRL manual to you but, then you would miss out on so much more other valuable and informative information in the process.

    My Best.

Nope it is on an unused fireplace in the house, so its where I currently have my 2m mounted That has been up for oh geeze 10 years, My brother was a ham and just left it up when he left the house so I capitalized on it when I got my ticket..

Thanks for the input everyone, I am a huge fan of Arrow antenna,s and the J pole looks pretty neat, I mostly use it for local repeaters so I don't need a huge performer or large antenna, I might just give that one a try out.

Good go on the arrow, and if you invest in some paint you can make it all but disappear...
