Just passing along information to help setting up the com ports on Linux just a bit easier. After much difficulty in the past I have been using the US Converter UT-880 and recommend it if you do not have a com port on you computer.
This program works on Mint as well as Ubuntu and suspect other flavors as well. Easiest way to set up the com ports is to download a GUI program, GTKTerm. It saved me hours of trying several command lines.
And do not forget to add yourself to the Dialout:
    usermod -a -G dialout MY_USER_NAME
