I'm a pretty new General Class operator and I'm interested in doing my first contest. I see there is a January VHF contest soon and I have a few questions. My shack radio setup is a Yaesu FT8900 FM transceiver and a Yaesu FT DX1200 HF transceiver that is 6 meter capable. I see that the contest is setup around number of grid squares. Do very many people use FM in this contest? I'm not sure how many grid squares I can contact on FM simplex. I use N3FJP logging software to upload to LOTW but I see that the upload is in something called Cabrillo format. Is there a conversion for the two? Thanks,
There's some FM, but not much. N3FJP has a VHF contest log program which will automatically convert to Cabrillo.
I've wanted to try 2m FT8. Is anyone going to be playing with that or other digital modes? Or just SSB? I only have a 5e yagi and no tower so I'm limited on range.
Is there a "goto" frequency to use? I have never contested before. With my IC2200 I could participate in the FM portion.
