Is anyone using HAMshield?

    I agree and I think something like this has to be certified by the FCC.

    I don't see why. If a radio is in kit form, there is no requirement for type acceptance or other accreditation. This is no different from any other radio kit. The only problem is if they don't have some disclaimer that you need a ham license for this. I haven't read all the literature so can't say.

    This is an assembled board so, would it need type acceptance? In the instructables text it does mention changing the call sign to your own in the Arduino code. Much possibility for abuse exists with this product.

    When debates about certification and the like come up, the word from those who seem to know is that there is no type acceptance or certification for amateur radio transmitters. Receivers or really anything with a oscillator needs to be certified. This seems to be correct. https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/type-acceptance.326307/#post-2420281 I guess strictly speaking this (and any Arduino shield with an oscillator) needs to be certified for receiver radiation.

    That said, it looks like a cool device to play with. The main page at https://inductivetwig.com/products/hamshield does say "You will also need an amateur radio license." in the "Skills Required" section. Half a watt is plenty to get to my local 2m repeater so I could make a useful transceiver with that. Of course I could also by a cheap HT for less than $99 but also less fun :)
