Interfacing a UV-5R+ HT to TinyTrak3+ for APRS

    I am trying to build an inexpensive APRS beacon with stuff I have on hand. Has anyone tried to interface a Baofeung UV-5R+ to a Byonics TinyTrack3+ unit? I have found a pin out for the UV-5R+ at http://www.miklor.com/COM/UV_Technical.php but was wondering if anyone has actually done it and if there were any problems or tips. For example, can you use the +V on the tip of the 3.5mm jack to power the TinyTrak? I have already interfaced an old Pharos GPS receiver from Microsoft Streets & Trips to the TinyTrak3+ to gather position data but was looking for a cheap transmitter and have a Baofeng handy.

    I think the output on the UV-5R jack is regulated 3.3 V.

    Unless you just need a few ma at 3.3V I would not use that. It normally powers a mic element and/or LED.

    Thanks for the info. I may just see if I can find an 8 AA battery holder and use it for the power for the TinyTrak initially or a couple of 9V batteries in parallel.
