The Hughes AK-100 Sound Retrieval System is the only commercial audio product ever produced and marketed by Hughes Aircraft Electronics Division. Hughes built the AK-100 to military specifications of a high order but they really flubbed in marketing the unit in the late 80's. As a result few were sold and the unit was abandoned. In 1993 the Hughes Audio Division became SRS Labs which incorporates the SRS technology into consumer audio, mainly HD TV's. SRS is NOT a Dolby matrix surround decoder but an Audio Spatialyzer that works with BOTH Stereo OR Mono (switchable) recordings and broadcast audio.

The Sound Retrieval System (SRS) uses patented psychoacoustic 3D audio processing technology originally invented by Arnold Klayman.. (The original SRS patents are US patents 4,866,774, 4,748,669, and 4,841,572) The SRS technology applies head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) to create an immersive 3D sound field using only two speakers, widening the "sweet spot," creating a more spacious sense of ambience, and producing strong localization cues for discrete instruments within an audio mix.
The unit has one stereo Input & Output for Sound Source, and a “Loop In & Out” for a recording device.

(CD-R or Tape) This unit works quite well, but is obviously not on par with a 5 channel discrete surround sound system. While it will improve a two channel stereo sound system, it is also a collector’s item (Military Quality Build by Hughes) and was the first unit to use many sound separation patents that are still in use today.

The unit For sale is in Excellent condition both electronically and cosmetically. It has had very little use. The thin protective plastic film frequently found on new electronics LED displays was never removed from this unit's LED front panel display. It comes with the original factory box and a photocopy of the manual.

    More photos available upon request.
Asking $150 Shipped, fairly firm due to condition.
