Since I was home sick today :) I decided to test my skills and get my very first image/s from the NOAA birds. The picture is not great, but its start and I was very encouraged after a few failed attempts. This picture was collected with my ICOM R8500 and a Discone in the attic with WXtoIMG software. Next time I'll setup the FunCubeDongle and see how it goes. Anyone else into this? would love see other picture and hear about your setups.

Picutre 2of5: The IC-R8500 has the wrong filter BW's 12Khz or 125KHz. Instead of the more ideal 30-50KHZ

I'm not a huge fan of eggbeaters, but they work well in certain applications.... Both the ISS and WeFAX are great satellites for reception with an inexpensive, homemade eggbeater. A lot of people use verticals with mild success but they often do not realize how much of the pass they're missing. I visited one ham in Mississippi who leaves his running on the WeFax or ISS all the time just using an Eggbeater and I would surmise he is copying 3x what a station using a vertical only would see, if not more.

    W5PFG,

Agreed, my antenna selection was limited at that time and the Discone actually did better than my Diamond dual band vertical during my back to back testing. If I have time this weekend I'm going to try and build a QHA antenna like the one below.

You will love the Quadrafilar Helix. I have a small one for UHF that works wonders for its size. If you can't go with a directional antenna, it's almost the next best thing.
