    Nope. Not true.

From 1990 until 2000, all that was needed for General, Advanced or Extra was 5 wpm and a medical waiver.

All it took to get a medical waiver was a form letter signed by a doctor....any MD or DO.

Bonnie, you can deal me into the Advanced survival challenge,
I upgraded from General to Advanced on 05/8/1981.

I kept my advanced call sign [KI0GY] when I upgraded to extra because I knew it would be special some day, and that I met the code requirement.

With HOAs becoming more and more of a Pox on The Land over time, Living in a HOA "community" likely turns off Young People to the prospect of Ham Radio. Gone for the kid is the concept of following an antenna wire to its source to find an Elmer as so many of us did: Now that's a job for the HOA Police.

I passed my 20 wpm test at the same test session a friend passed his. We both became Extras the same day. He had never had a CW QSO and, to my knowledge, still has not to this day. Did it all with code tapes in those days.

Now personally I think that's nuts, and operating CW is FUN, but... it can be done and people have done it.

Only the most fun you can have on the ham bands!

Before young people can be turned off to ham radio, they would need to be made aware that it exists.

Yep, you're right. And tracing the wire back to the antenna is how many hams found out that it existed. Which they can't do in a "neighbourhood" under Jack Booted HOA Control.
