    Gerald L. (Jerry) Hale died Oct. 12, 2017 at his home in Deltona, Florida. He was 79 years old. Mr. Hale was born in Waterloo and raised in Rhodes, Iowa, the son of James A. and Dollie (Hall) Hale.
    He graduated from Rhodes High School in 1955 at the age of 16 and joined the U. S. Navy, leaving for boot camp 4 days after his 17th birthday.
    He met Margot Martha Irma Bartsch, daughter of Alfred and Irmgard (Dange) Bartsch while serving in Germany in 1957.
    Margot and Jerry were married in Germany in 1958.
    Mr. Hale served for 24 years in the Navy and retired in 1979 as Chief Radioman.

    Jerry immediately joined the Merchant Marine, Radio Officers Union. He served as Master Radio Electronics Officer on various ships before being assigned to the SS LNG Libra (Energy Transportation Corp) where he worked until retirement from the Merchant Marine in 1998.

    Mr. Hale lived in many places while serving in the military and Merchant Marine, primarily in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, VA. He and his wife moved to Deltona in in 1998.

    Mr. Hale was interested in Amateur Radio (KOJH) and was a member of the American Radio Relay League and the Indian Mound Amateur Radio Society of Deltona.

    His most important hobby was family history research.
    He published books on Margot's Bartsch line and on the Hale and Shearer lines as well as several articles in Ancestry and Genealogical Computing magazines.

    Mr. Hale's body was cremated and a service will be held at a later date at the Eden Cemetery in Rhodes, Iowa along side his wife Margot and his oldest daughter Phylis, who both preceded him in death, as well as his parents, James and Dollie Hale.

    Jerry leaves behind a daughter Michele (Hale) Yohe and her husband William Harvey Yohe, III of Concord, NC, and three sisters, Jean Pfantz, Ankeny, IA, Joan (Jack) Cardani, Boone, IA and Vicki Hale, Marshalltown, IA, as well three grandchildren, Dan Smith of Norfolk, VA, Alexis and Morgan Yohe of Concord, NC, 2 great grandchildren Amanda and Sarah in NC, and many nieces and nephews in Iowa.
