What I've quoted is the future, whether we like it or not.  Digital is in; analog is out.  It'll take 10 to 20 years to completely sweep the country though.

As far as the cost of digital radio systems, they are expensive -- very expensive.  But, they are capable, much more capable than similar, traditional analog systems.  We're also talking about GOVERNMENT spending at all levels -- very political.  The costs involved fuel our economy, whether either one of us like it or not.

Also, check-out Alaska's federal, state, and local cooperative P25, trunked radio system, called Alaska Land Mobile Radio (ALMR).  It covers our roads through the State on shared civilian (FCC) and federal government (NTIA) VHF spectrum -- from the Kenai Peninsula to Anchorage, up the Parks Hywy to Fairbanks, and back down the Richardson and Glenn Hywys into Anchorage -- to include road coverage following the Copper River into Valdez.  It's coverage will make Texas look small... (google ALMR)

P.S.   I've always enjoyed telling Texans that even if they doubled the size of their state, they'd still remain in 2nd place.
