    PACTOR 4.
America's FCC wants it to pop into existence --out of thin air-- during times of emergency.
Then later, they want to put it back in the Technology Jail.

What would hams say if they did that with SSB?

The sarcasm is misdirected. The FCC didn't ask for PACTOR-4 to be put to use: the League did. The FCC simply approved the request and then an extension.

Will it actually see any use this time? 3-4 previous STA fails say it won't be used, or needed.

That's what I want to know, as well. Are there any AR hurricane operations? Are they operations that can't be done with other normally-street-legal modes?

If we're truly interested in "advancing the radio art", the symbol rate rule has to go. High-speed, low bandwidth communications are here now ... and they're effective, whether or not they're used on the "hurricane net". It's time to get serious if amateur radio is to continue playing a role in emergency communications .... beyond monitoring the parking lots for the actual players.

The FCC stopped requiring reporting to the DIRS database on Sept. 7. No need for amateurs by the look of it.

    Agreed.

Amateur radio hasn't been a "serious" player in emergency communications for quite some time. The diehards refuse to recognize the obvious going so far as to interpret Part 97.1(a) as a mandate, the only reason for amateur radio to exist, and the really hilarious one was the claim that it's a "statutory obligation". Look up the definition of "statutory obligation" and then explain to every licensed amateur that they are subject to a "legal duty" to preform a "voluntary"
    (97.1(a)) service.

Agreed, sir. IMHO the ARRL and the ham community at-large have caused their own problem. And all the QST articles about green-vest high-school students with their Baofengs or their "go kits" ain't gonna change that.

Why is PACTOR 4 a question in use? Is it a BW issue?
I don't use PACTOR and Im not familiar with it.
