I was just browsing around on the Internet and came across a website listing "famous ham radio operators and their call signs)

I was astounded to see some quite familiar household names.

Chris Tarrant G0KRH presenter of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?"

Feargal Sharkey G0OAN Lead Singer of the Undertones

    Priscilla Presley NY6YOS

    Donnie Osmond WD4SKT

Sir Cliff Richard W2JOF (now this one I find hard to believe)

I knew Chris Tarrant was well into his fishing, but a radio amateur? And Fergal Sharkey, that's even more of a surprise.

Priscilla Presley and Donnie Osmond, really?

There are sites out there that list "famous hams" that are not correct. My name and original callsign of KA3VSP appeared on most of these lists in the 1990's. I've contacted all of the site owners and have been removed from most of the site, but I'm still listed on a couple of sites. I have no idea how or why I got listed.

All the famous hams I've worked are dead hams: (They weren't dead when I worked them, as far as I could tell. Barry Goldwater might have been an exception. :D)

    Arthur Godfrey
    Andy Devine
    Barry Goldwater
Herbert Hoover, Jr. (He actually wrote a tech article in QST!)

I should mention: Although comedian Drew Carey isn't a ham (at least, not that I know of) he alleged to being one in his TV show, where he said, "Now all I have to do is dust off my ham radio and I'd be the biggest loser in the world!" (An actual quote from the would be interesting to find out who wrote that.)

The above 3 are not radio amateurs, never have been.

People digging around in old callbooks jumping to the wrong conclusions, they get placed on websites, and it then becomes 'fact' ;)

I doubt most here on qrz have ever heard of Chris Tarrant or Cliff Richard.... they haven't missed much ;)

For a time Hoover had a home on the beach in Caprenteria, CA (immediately south of Santa Barbara) The exclusive beach community was (and still is) antenna restricted even in those days. He hid his vertical antenna inside a wooden flag pole. Subsequent owners of the home were amazed when a freak lightening storm rolled over the coastal community...struck the flag pole blowing it apart and revealing the remnants of the vertical antenna.

You were probably off on a black widow hunt when the roll was called.
