    January 20, 1925 - September 29, 2017
Elbert Leroy Owen (Bert) was born January 20, 1925 to Jesse B. and Bessie Ballard Owen, near Owens Cross Roads which was named after his great-grandfather. Bert worked a lot of rocky hills alongside his parents as sharecroppers in Madison, AL. Bert was the middle son of 3 boys (brothers Bernard and Stanley). Bert was saved at 10 years old and was a faithful Christian.

Bert graduated from Hazel Green High School during the middle of WWII. While classmates were drafted, he had a farming deferment which allowed him to stay home for an additional year. Most of his classmates never returned. After his year deferment was up, he was drafted and sent to radio school and served in Philippines under General McArthur as his radio man.

Bert was able to go to Auburn University on the GI Bill and received a degree in electronic engineering. He retired from the U.S. Army Missile Command in 1980. After retirement Bert served as Limestone County Correction Facility bible teacher for almost 25 years. Bert (AK4G) enjoyed communicating with people around the world as an amateur radio operator.

He married Sarah Virginia Atnip in 1949. Bert and Sarah moved to Huntsville, AL and had 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls. Sarah passed away in 1978.

Bert married Elsie Lewis in 1979. They share 22 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Bert lived in the East Limestone community for the past 60 years.

He is survived by three sons and two daughters, Wayne (Janice) Owen, Richard Owen, Greg (Susie) Owen, Sheila (Dale) Borden and Karen (Jeff) Hodges. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Susie (Augie) Semple and Karen (Johnny) Robison.

Services for Bert will be 2:00PM Monday, October 2, 2017 at Fairview Baptist Church with Bro. George Whitten and Bro. John Hafner officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-9:00PM Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.
