"The decision by the Executive Committee results from a determination that Ames unilaterally and repeatedly communicated with officials of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on behalf of NTS, making commitments on behalf of ARRL without authority and in violation of the rules and regulations of the ARRL Field Organization. Those actions were contrary to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding between FEMA and ARRL, which states clearly that ARRL Headquarters staff will be the single point of contact between FEMA and ARRL. There is no independent relationship between NTS and FEMA; the ARRL/FEMAMemorandum of Understanding is the operative document."

I'm sure there's more politics and backstory than the ARRL release gives. What's the word?

Awwww, somebody tried to get off their duff and DO something. That's against the ARRL rules you know!

Reading the article referenced, it appears he was told to stop prior but kept doing it anyway.

I'd say that is reason enough. Its not like they just yanked him, they hit his hand with the ruler hard first.

Representing a membership organization when the organization's leadership already stated not to do that isn't very smart.

I think QRZ cut off the actual content in your post. Darn forum glitches! What were your thoughts again?

That's a general problem with volunteer organizations, it's hard to fire people! It's hard enough to get volunteers, so reluctant to evict someone unless they really screw up.

Maybe he exposed the slow responses from the ARRL, decided to act on his own and got canned.

Now who would you want involved in a FEMA style emergency.....a dinosaur or someone proactive?

I wonder about the other side of the equation - FEMA. Since they have a specific agreement with ARRL why did they continue to negotiate beyond the bounds of that agreement? If Sumner warned Ames to stop it, then surely Sumner would at the same time have reviewed the agreement with whichever FEMA bureaucrats were involved, and alerted them that Ames was out of bounds with respect to the agreement.
