QST de W1AW ARRL Bulletin 9 ARLB009 From ARRL Headquarters Newington CT March 24, 2020 To all radio amateurs In response to an executive order from Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont that all non-essential businesses and not-for-profit entities reduce in-person workforces because of COVID-19 pandemic concerns, W1AW has slightly altered its transmission schedule. W1AW has suspended its morning code practice and qualifying run transmissions, beginning March 24, 2020. However, W1AW's evening transmissions, including qualifying runs, will be sent as usual -- there are no changes to the evening transmit schedule. W1AW remains closed to the public. Please see http://www.arrl.org/news/arrl-headquarters-is-closing for further details. NNNN /EX
Finally an acknowledgment from the ARRL that they're non essential in emergencies by acceptance of the order.
As far as I know the process is automatic and no one actually send the code so why shut it down. Gives hams an opportunity to isolate themselves and concentrate on the code. Is that not we are supposed to do? When a emergency occurs they are quick to ask the amateurs for help. Some people just do not think. Follow like sheep i.e. Governor of CT
ARRL HQ the building is closed. ARRL the organization is not; key HQ employees are working from home.
Love the fact that you can listen to CW and try and get my code speed up again. Been a mighty long time. Dave KD7KE
Me thinks that the ARRL is "virtue signaling" by cutting their hours. By giving the impression that they're "all-in" with what the whole world is dealing with, they sent a positive message to the community at large. While I applaud their efforts to comply, I feel that this move is largely symbolic, and will in no way effect the fight against this pandemic......
not a member so i have no right to say anything, so, why not get modern like tons of hams have. actually ive noticed many net companies have used the virus to further reduce their already lousy customer service. i exclude my credit card co's who are 100 % on the job when i call...
You are incorrect, check any operating / service manual from the 1950's thru 60's and you will find the receiver specs (Hallicrafters, Hammerlund, National, and Collins) are called out in KC and MC. de W0HXL
...aside from the orders in CT that non-essential businesses and organizations shall physically close / shift workers to telecommuting to the greatest extent possible, and that residual skeleton staff shall be minimized and abide by social distancing requirements. So, the League is actually complying, with Joe walking over in the evenings to fire up W1AW to send the bulletins under the skeleton staff exception. It's not hard to abide by the social distancing requirements when you're the only person in the building.
