    Hi All,
    Have a look at VARA.
It is a new Milspec digital mode adjusted for the U.S. HF (or VHF) ham bands.
Meaning it satisfies all the current FCC legal requirements for HF digital.
    < 300 baud, < 2.4 KHz bandwidth.
52 Carriers in orthogonally spaced subcarriers.
    Multiple OS platforms.
    Thruput speeds comparable with P3.....

Full Winlink functionality using the Winlink Express radio email client in Telnet mode.

"VARA is a High Performance HF modem based on OFDM modulation. VARA Modem, brings state of the art Military grade technology to new and existing HF data.

Introduces a new standard of technology available for Amateur and Commercial use. Designed for operation within a SSB Bandwidth of 2400 Hz."

Uh, looked at the video and quickly realized that I know next to nothing about this technology...
Some narrative background on the material being shown in the video would be helpful.
What is this a demonstration of? From the title I take it is some sort of a "file transfer" demonstration(?) What is the bar graph showing? What does the graph in the top right pane display? What are the meters reporting? How would a typical amateur use this technology?

Gees, look a the screen KG7FIU, bar graph is BPS (Bits per second), VU audio input, CPU computer usage, AFC automatic frequency control, s/n signal to noise ratio, can't get much more clear than that as it is all labeled.

Interesting stuff, I downloaded the latest and watched the YouTube video by VE1XOP. I'll give it a try in a day or so,

    I agree. self explanatory.

Nice technical advancement if all you want to do is send email, other than that what purpose does it serve? Probably not a good idea to associate it with Winlink if you want to generate interest.

Well, there is no accounting for the Winlink haters. It makes sense to use an existing Winlink interface that is also familiar to operators, rather than re-inventing the wheel and creating a competing 'me too" interface.

It is noteworthy that Senor Ros learned his lesson from the debacle over his first data mode. No extravagant claims and no inaccurate claims of being spread spectrum. He has couched this mode offering in terms of being compliant with existing data standards and limited in bandwidth to no more than typical voice modes. :)

Would there be objections if Ros had designed VARA to use the FLDIGI or HRD interfaces? ;)

looks very good , seems to listen for NAK's and hearing none bumps the rate up each time ? much better then waiting for a ACK
    that could be missed.
and please don't listen to the naysayers and 300 baud limit old timers ,
if it fits down the mic input (300-3khz ) it should not be a problem on the bands.

That's not the problem and neither is the Winlink concept itself, it's the jerks that do stupid stuff with it like drop an unattended RMS on top of the JT65 activity. Thankfully VARA will have
to be confined to the ACDS subbands. It's not being a hater if you want the Winlink crowd to clean up their act and quit abusing other ops. You still didn't answer what purpose
VARA serves besides email, not really an advanced application of the airwaves although VARA is quite interesting technically.

Okay, try putting it with like bandwidth modes and see what kind of reception you get to that idea.

Only, I've never seen anyone complain about the operators. They complain about Winlink! [edit: And how ARRL promotes Winlink and how Winlink is going to take over the bands and destroy amateur radio.]

That's because the operators in most cases can't be identified and they are operating under the Winlink banner (network). Winlink, as an organization, has absolved itself of any responsibility for the network
leaving it up to the RMS owners and clients to behave. ARRL has been pushing Winlink since the first ad hoc digital committee and not listening or doing anything about the abuse complaints. The most recent
ARRL initiative is going after WSPR activity because some of it is running unattended outside the ACDS bands, never mind some WSPR is in violation of beacon rules, 24/7 is a no-no. Why WSPR and not the
    outlaw Winlinkers?
