Just worked 4U1UN on 20m CW (1710 UTC). Fast and good operator. I read 4U1UN is preparing to be back on the bands, but I'm wondering if this was the real one or again one of these pirates who fooled me in the past? (JX7W comes to mind)

Would be an ATNO for me.

<EDIT> Now (1738 UTC) worked him on 20m FT8 (fox/hound mode). Running up to 5 slots.

Don't know if what you worked was real, but most likely it was legit because 4U1UN IS back on the air.

Here's the text of an e-mail that our contest/dx club received from one of our members who was involved in getting 4U1UN back on the air:

On August 22, 2018 after 10 years of silence the UN Headquarters callsign 4U1UN in New York City was heard again.

Although the 4U1UN was only active for about 20 min for equipment testing purposes, this is just the beginning of a new chapter.

The 4U1UN now has a new club room, an Elecraft K3 radio, an ACOM 2000 amp and a BigIR vertical antenna for 10-40M. More antennas and equipment will follow in order to satisfy more bands and modes. The goal is to get the station active as it was in the past, before my time.

The equipment is located at 41st Floor and it is accessed remotely (through RemoteRig boxes) from the Club Room, located at the first floor, where guest operators can get access in an easier way.

This is a project that Andy (YO3JR) and I (KO8SCA) started more than 2 years ago while we were planning our participation in WRTC. It was a long and very hard journey with many failures and small victories along the way.

Right from the start it was clear that getting the club active again could not be achieved by making a formal request at the UN or knowing someone that works at the UN. This approach was tried by others before us and failed.

Many people helped and many people tried to give us a hard time or suggested that we should just give up because others, smarter than us tried and failed. One day, when all is settled, we should tell our story.

But now, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank a few people that had a key role in our success.

Dave (K1ZZ) through his position at IARU gave our project a legitimate backing and helped us open many doors.
Tom (NY2RF) and Norm (W3IZ) helped ensure backing from ARRL as a large amateur radio organization.
Jose (CT1BOH) had the missing piece of the puzzle and his help was instrumental in achieving the final goal.
The moment Jose got involved in the 4U1UN project we finally felt the victory was ensured.

Most of the equipment was donated by Dima (RA9USU) and his friends. The Elecraft K0 remote head was donated by the N2UN (SK) estate with the help of Andy (K2LE).

And of course James (K2QI) was involved and helped along the way, as he is the current custodian of the 4U1UN license.
A big thank you to all of you that helped us in this project. I hope we can again unite our forces for future endeavors.

    Thanks for the info!

Meanwhile I found in another forum that immediately after that short SSB activity, a pirate appeared in CW on 14.025 MHz. And that was the frequency I worked him yesterday, so probably again a pirate.

But the future of 4U1UN is looking promising, so I certainly will get the "real one" some day.

I've certainly worked 4U1ITU lots of times over the years . . .

No surprising, since you've had plenty of opportunities to hear/work them since you first obtained your license well before 2008.

But, with 4U1UN off the air for the past ten years, everyone who's obtained his/her license --or began DXing-- since 2008 hasn't had any chance. ;)

The real 4U1UN was on 20m SSB for just a few minutes. Both the CW and FT8 were pirates.

The SSB pile up had an ample number of lids.
