26 Portuguese amateur radio clubs united against 144-146-MHz reallocation
A team representing over two dozen of Portuguese amateur radio clubs – including those affiliated with IARU and EURAO - met on Monday, the 15th, with the national telecommunications regulator ANACOM to deliver a message urging the rejection of the French proposal to reallocate the amateur 2 meter band to the Aeronautical service that, if not opposed soon, will be on the table at the WRC2023.

According to a statement released later in the day, the representatives of the Portuguese clubs said that ANACOM's officers praised the initiative and added that it “assists in the Portuguese regulator's position” regarding this matter. Although stopping short of a full commitment, the regulator's reaction was viewed as “positive and in concordance with the objectives proposed at the club´s meeting, on July 6th.”

From 17 to 26 clubs in two weeks

That conference, heralded by many observers as “unprecedented”, was held on July 6th in the city of Santarém and hosted by ARR, the local amateur radio club that provided the space and teleconferencing equipment.

The initial group of 17 clubs agreed on a common strategy and elected a representative body of five elements that would hand deliver a written statement signed by all at the preparatory meeting of the team that will represent Portugal at WRC2023.

Earlier that week, ANACOM had written back to radio clubs and individual amateur radio operators that had sent letters urging the opposition to the French known as PTA (19)090R1.

In that answer, ANACOM´s amateur radio head officer said that it “made a note” of the objections and that was inviting “external entities” to attend a preparatory meeting scheduled for Monday, the 15th.

In the space of two weeks, the number of Portuguese Amateur Radio clubs endorsing the agreed strategy and proposal grew from 17 to 26, as more became aware of the outline of the document to be delivered.

The representative body added that although it is satisfied with yesterday´s answer from ANACOM, will keep a close watch, in the weeks to come, on further developments on this matter.
