This can be especially alarming when the sun is purple...

Narrowband photography shows certain features better at certain wavelengths. https://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/

OK, here's an 'idiot's quick guide to Sun FUN FACTS!'!

-- The Sun is a fusion factory that converts hydrogen to helium. There are other elements present, but these are as recycled material from earlier supernovae and red giants. The Sun is recycled material, in part

--The Sun is OPAQUE. It radiated because it is a HOT opaque globe. Photons produced in the fusion process essentially 'leak' out over thousands of years. If the Sun stopped fusing tomorrow (ignoring the concommitant gravitational collapse) it would still be radiating light

--There is no surface of the Sun. It does have 'zones' as you head towards the center, and most of the energy we get is conveyed via convection to the outer layer (I will let you look up the word for that:)

--The sun is MILLIONS of DEGREES at its core---but is essentially self insulating. It is a very inefficient, leaky opaque globe.

--The Sun is a transient (HF) RF source and on occasion, some of the sky noise you hear at HF is solar in origin.

What scares the hell out of me is that after a life full of technical learning, all of the "How the Universe Works" TV show and 25+ years as a ham.... how little actually understand about how the sun works and what is actually good for propagation!

    Thanks,

    Ed
