    Thomas L. Smith, WB8MHJ SK

    Thomas Lee Smith

Tom L. Smith, age 73 of Woodland passed unexpectedly on Thursday, September 14, 2017. He was born in Hastings, MI on April 26, 1944 to John Jr. and Margaret J. (Rowlader) Smith. Tom will be missed by his wife Lynda Smith, children Tom (Heidi) Smith, and Elizabeth Smith; father, John Jr. Smith, granddaughter, Isabelle, siblings Denny (Kathy) Smith, Gary (Debbie) Smith, Jeanne (Mark) Shook, Janet Adams, Joanne (Rick) King, and David Smith; special friend and neighbor, Leola Hewitt; and his nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Smith.

Tom worked at Hough Brothers in Sunfield for 30 years, and in that time he initiated a computer engineering program that was among the first of its kind in the country. He thoroughly enjoyed flying to the different job sites with his boss Murray Hough. Tom also was a pilot. He was an avid ham radio operator from age 17, and his call letters were WB8MHJ. He will be greatly missed by his friends on the ham bands.

Tom loved music, and could play several acoustic stringed instruments, but was greatly accomplished as a finger-picking guitarist in the style of his favorite musician, Chet Atkins. He played music daily and some of his happiest moments were playing his guitar and singing songs with his family – especially his three year old granddaughter, Isabelle, who was the apple of his eye.

Visitation is planned for Tuesday, September 19 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Sunfield United Brethren Church. Interment will take place at Woodland Memorial Park at 2 p.m. A luncheon will be served at the church immediately following the funeral service. Online condolences can be left at www.koopfc.com
