Hello folks, Sometime in mid-June I'll be riding mostly off-road (on the Trans-America Trail) from Trinidad CO to the Oregon coast on an on/off road motorcycle. The plan is to camp along the way as much as possible and operate QRP from my campsites. The route will take me into Arches NP (UT) and Great Basin NP (NV) where, schedule permitting, I'll camp and be able to give out those locations to participants in the NPOTA event. As the departure date gets closer I'll be able to settle on an exact date and will post that info here. The entire trip will take 10-14 days, traversing some very remote locations. I'll be riding solo but will have a satellite tracker that will plot my position to an online map every 10 minutes. I will be operating primarily 20 20 and 30 meter CW after my local sunset using an MTRv2 QRP rig and a PAR end-fed antenna. This combination served me well when I rode the 1st half of the Trail back in September. Updates and other details (as well as photos from the 1st half of the ride) will also be posted to my website: https://tatqrp.wordpress.com Radio-specific stuff is here: https://tatqrp.wordpress.com/the-radio
Sounds like it will be a blast! Glad to see there are other DR riders on here. I just did a 2 week trip down in Baja on my DR. Wish I could have taken a radio along for the journey. Once I get proficient in CW, my Elecraft KX1 will accompany me on all my rides. I want to ride the TAT soon, so I'll be excited to read about your journey.
UPDATE: The website has moved to here (I got tired of all the Wordpress ads): http://www.ae5xreport.com
You would seem to have Adventure Motorcycling in common with Paula (aka 'Adventure Girl') NX1P in Brookings, OR. Have fun!
Have fun - sounds like a blast! I rode all over Colorado on my KLR 650 and camped off it too - usually 4-5 day trips. The back country here is beautiful. Sadly, my riding days are over after a pickup made a left in front of me and put me in the hospital for 2 weeks, and a wheelchair for 2 months. My wife lost an uncle due to a MC accident, and almost me - ATGATT! Not to be a downer - have fun and be safe! Steve KV6O
I've exchanged a few emails with Paula. Her QRZ.com page is quite interesting as well. John AE5X http://ae5x.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html
Steve KV6O: Sorry to hear about your accident. One of the reasons I migrated from street riding to (mostly) off-road is that I got tired of riding around cars whose drivers are texting, etc. But life involves risk and if the benefits are worth them, we accept those risks. In the meantime, I've settled on a departure date for my ride - 10 July. Details in link below. John AE5X http://ae5x.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html
