The first diploma in this series, the club council approved a diploma dedicated to the international airport of Lyon (France), named after Antoine de Saint-Exupery, an outstanding writer, journalist and professional pilot, a participant in the Second World War. Terms of the AGPA Diploma - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: QSO’s to diploma count from March 3, 2019. You must get 100 scores. The members of the «Knights of the Sky» club, the representatives of France give 10 scores. The members of the «Knights of the Sky» club of other countries give 5 scores. Other amateur radio stations representatives of France give - 3 scores. Repeated QSO’s with the same member of the club are counted only on different bands and modes, repeated QSOs on the same bands and modes only on different dates. Hi Claude, Its good to see how you have revealed the biases that apparently drive these 'certificates'. Look harder and you will see air terminals, extant, with the above names. I pointed them out because they were both hams. And, I might add, great Americans and aviators. There should also be a Pancho Barnes certificate. Go figure that one out. Learning is fun. 73 Chip W1YW
Hi Chip, I do understand your point. Nevertheless, one should remember that the award manager rules the game. Here, they say "Airport named after famous people", full stop (being an ham is not a criteria to be elected). I can name buildings having meeting rooms named after St Ex or whoever you may like to name. Endless list and the award program would then become full non-sense, IMVHO. 73, Claude, F5PBL
General Steve Walz, the Airport is 4KS "WALZ" in USA If being in Wikipedia makes you Great then I qualify!!!!! LoL and a ham too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Endless nonsense certificate list ICT the international designator for the airport in Wichita Kansas is called the Eisenhower International Airport the problem with this award is airports have designators initially not actually named after someone on the international designator, Kennedy and George Bush Airports all have designators and that's what pilots know them by 1st. Most airports in the United States call the terminal by famous people such as Barry Goldwater terminal in Phoenix, going back to Howard Hughes I think if you look around Las Vegas you might find a terminal called Hughes!!!! By the way both of those people were hams but I guess for this stupid list it isn't a requirement, as they defined it later on
I used Wikipedia for closure date reference, not for stating who is famous or not. Please give me credit me that. Airports are identified via ICAO/IATA codes and these codes are the official ones for all aeronautical documentation and do not change (except very rare exceptions). Nevertheless, "the guy in the street" knows "Charles de Gaulle airport" but may not know LFPG/CDG or knows "Heathrow" but may not know EGLL/LHR. Over the time, an aiport may change its "civil" name. LFLL was previously known as Lyon Satolas. It is now called Lyon St Exupery. Similarly, IAH changed its "civil name" from "Houston Intercontinental Airport" to "G. Bush Intl" in the late '90s. Back to the award rules : the award manager has choosen to refer to "airport (civil) names", not "terminal names" or "meeting rooms names". As yet said, the award manager is the ruler. Next point to be argued : how one can qualify for being "great people of our civilization of all times and peoples." Once again, the award manager is the ruler. Like it or not, that is the way it is. I think the point is that this is not considered a coveted award amongst hams, and for all practical purposes, is "ignored". The basis, in part, is, IMO, an absence of substantive and objective criteria, as well as an absence of a true ham radio tie in. Its pretty, but so is my morning cereal box. Since Saint-Exupery now shows up -3- times in this thread, we should invite ALL hams to find our about that remarkable person--start with wikipedia if you like. There are plenty of hams--historical AND contemporary--that make(de) major contributions to the world we live in. We really should be celebrating them more directly than an ode to airports. My opinion anyway. Yours may differ. I am trying to think of the last airport I thought was decent enough to celebrate. Possibly Detroit. Or Jackson Hole (JAC). Sure as heck NOT LOGAN (Boston)!
