    A tense situation involving a Norwegian radio amateur that reached the diplomatic and foreign ministry level in the African Republic of Chad now has been resolved. Kenneth Opskar, LA7GIA, had only operated as TT8KO for about a day before security police shut down his station on October 10.

    That's impossible. Everybody knows the bands are dead and there's no DX to be worked. ;)

    First I had heard he was actually back. Why should this thread be closed already? Do you have a source or a link with this information?

    Never mind, but thanks anyway ...

    Guess I'd better be re-thinking my present plans for the renewing of our wedding vows and 2nd honeymoon.

    The XYL will be SO disappointed. :(

    Perhaps, Walt Disney World?!? :)

    Its important that we refrain from expressing opinions that could easily jeopardize the safety of fellow hams. Given the fact that Ken is back, the chapter is closed.

    Do you WANT an analysis? OK--here it is----

    1) Ken changed his QTH after he arrived in Chad;
    2) That --new-- QTH was slated to be used by the visiting President (unknown to Ken);
    3) the government of Chad had internal issues over having someone with 'spy or brain frying equipment' in the same hotel as 2);
    4) no one wanted to lose their jobs (or worse!)over allowing a 'spy or brain frying equipment' installation;
    5) Ken was made guilty until proven innocent, not surprising given the Neopolitan code is French, and Chad is a former French territory;
    6) Ken obviously had nothing to do with spying or frying brains and was a victim of seeking out a less noisy QTH.

    IF Ken was still stuck in Chad, certain French hams would have helped through the French Consulate.

    Happy now?

    I know many of you are unhappy to think that ham radios can only be construed as dangerous by dummies, but there is plenty of illegal HF use in Africa by insurgents--- and EVERYONE knows about the RF brain frying stuff in Cuba and elsewhere. So the assumption they might have is WRONG --but it has a basis in a paranoid fact.

    The best thing you can do to help DXing hams in trouble is, IMO, shut up, send them money(if they need it), and make sure they know the right people to talk to.
