This (eventually shutting down wwv) is right up there with the public school system no longer teaching cursive handwriting (there's no funding for it ?). And, art, and music, who needs that stuff? And, why do we need pens or pencils? Soon, we won't need our hands anymore. There will be an "app" for them.
How the heck are people going to "sign" a contract? Am i digressing? No. We need to control the technology, and maintain our humanity, and not let the technology dictate our humanity.

Sadly, our society will become the service industry for the rest of the world. We just need to not forgot to put fries in their bag. Pay attention at who holds the skilled positions and who serves them next time your out.

Even skilled work is up for grabs.

I have written a lot of software that automates away the jobs of skilled people, including other software engineers. Software that can write software is some of the easiest stuff to automate.

There is very little work that cannot be automated away, either in part, or completely.

GPS isn't affected by propagation vagaries. WWV is.
    GPS is worldwide. WWV isn't.
With the former, the latter is obsolete.

This all makes total sense. In fact, I have a GPS clock running right underneath my TV.

That said, I still want WWV to continue. :)

Can you, for instance, calibrate analog SSTV program with a GPS?

Does this also mean 303-499-7111 is going away, too? I've used that number over the years when I couldn't get a signal or wasn't close to a receiver...

    For good time, call...

Okay, I couldn't resist that one.

I find it amusing how some people think everything needs to be replaced with something else.

It's almost like they never heard of the reason why there's redundancies before.

Oh we don't need land based minute man missile silos because we can launch from submarines at sea.

Oh we don't need shortwave radio stations because we have podcasts.

Oh we don't need buses because we drive cars.

Oh we don't need desktop computers because we have laptop computers.

Oh we don't need WWV because we have GPS.

Oh we don't need GPS because we have the internet.

Oh we don't need the internet because we have wrist watches.

Oh we don't need wrist watches because we have sundials.

    It just never ends...

That's very true. The idea of redundancy became a bad word when the Soviets decided to rebrand themselves in the early 1990's. In some ways, it was inevitable due to the ridiculous spending levels reached in years prior. But people no longer plan for large systemic failures anymore.
