I hope this gets posted up on QRZ news in time ...

"2017 will be an exceptional year"

    Some associated links below.

Kirk NTØZ wrote a good primer on regional DX'ing via "Space Rocks", although it perhaps predates and doesn't mention the advent of WSJT digital modes specifically engineered for scatter propagation like MSK-144.

An uptick in MS spots on the DX cluster is already apparent.

Visual sightings of "fireballs" can be reported to the AMS (like the one I saw last night). Their online reporting system and log is a marvelous example of web technology,

Meteor scatter on 6m has already been great fun as the Geminids ramp up. Should really get going starting tonight/tomorrow. You can have a lot of fun without spending much money. You can do a lot with a 3 element beam built from an old TV antenna and a 100 watts. Spend some time on https://www.pingjockey.net/cgi-bin/pingtalk and see what's going on. If you find you like it, I was introduced to pjclient (http://www.n5tm.com/) last week and highly recommend it. Almost all the guys on here also work 2m and 70cm on scatter and EME. Great bunch and they are willing to show you the ropes!

    Bwaahahahaa! :D

Oh Chip, it's mainly just a suggestion for the totally fad driven WSJT-X gang.

They don't need to just hang out on HF FT8, instead explore other band paths and modes already built into the same software. Of course, QRQ CW, your fav mode now, would work well for MS; if only those digi-guys would dare to do it too.

Could be great for the League's next-big-thing OTA, grid chasing, especially if confined to a highly antenna restricted situation, pre- or post-ARPA ;) Setting up a decently MS capable 2m or even 6m yagi temporarily doesn't take much time or effort. And 10m shouldn't be ignored either.

On the flip side there are always AM BA's to play with for clear channel long winded monologues

    Cool John:)

BTW, the NEW QST is da NUTZ.... I just posted my review, on the Zed.

Ping communications would fit right in as a future article.

It does look much better. Congrats to Steve WB8IMY.

But the Second Century editorial topic is a silly waste of column space. Unnecessarily swinging at a curveball in the dirt. Amateur radio and the ARRL face far more important issues thrown as "strikes" for the CEO to comment upon.

Lifted right out of The Zed forums, again, too!

Do you mean that NCIS crap?

Yeah! IMO that discussion isn't even newsworthy on the Zed, let alone the front of QST.

Attempt to ignore and/or distract from the pressing issues involving ARRL BoD malfeasance and other mis-management?

Oops, beware of the "... officious ###-%###" shot. :D

NY2RF's January 2018 Editorial in QST is a crass piece of nonsense, IMO, meant to impart insult by reminding us we should be insulted for something no one really paid attention to, and no one cares about.

He SHOULD worry that ham radio is perceived as lacking a culture of innovation, IMO. Why? Because we eat our young, as they say. We confuse innovation with mere 'maker'ing. And assume one leads to the other. Now THAT is a REAL problem.

He seems especially perturbed when someone says, for example, my HANDLE is 'Chip'.

Well Tom, NY2RF, you (apparently) new(er) ham, just so you know, that phrase was used in HAM RADIO long before CB.

Yep my HANDLE is indeed Chip. And I 've been saying that since 1966. Yep.

    What's YOUR handle??

I prefer to watch and photograph meteor showers, rather than listen to static on a radio. I can hear static any day or night I want to!
