Maj. George T. Weschler KE4MKT (SK)

It is with regret that I post the news that at Maj. George T. Weschler, KE4MKT of Punta Gorda FL, has crossed the log, and is now SK. He recently celebrated his 70th wedding anniversary last Tuesday, and was 93 years old.

Maj. Weschler had the distinction of being the first pilot to fly a B-29 Superfortress into combat operations. He was stationed in the Pacific theater of WWII with the 40th Bomb Group, 25th Sqdn. After returning home from the War, he worked until retirement ,for the FAA in Miami, FL. He was also an avid ham radio operator, making many contacts, and remarking many times, "how much fun and enjoyment, he had with the hobby".

I humbly ask our community to pause, look skyward, and pray for him to have clear skies, and a gentle tail wind, for his last mission home,,,

Very sorry to hear about his passing, but sounds like he had a long and good life. I know this will be hard on your grandmother too. Condolence to your family. There aren't many left of that amazing generation, and they will be missed by us all. Incidentally, the call is KE4MKJ, not "T".

 

I wish your grandfather fair winds and following seas.

Richard.... you certainly nailed it saying "There aren't many left of this amazing generation"..... These were the men that made our country so great and are responsible for enabling folks to truly find "the American dream".... God Bless George and my sincere condolences to his family. They must all be so proud to have shared their lives with him.

It would be really nice if when these post were made in a 'general' area, the poster would realize this is the main page of QRZ and is of world interest. With that in mind, people who read this probably would like to know WHY this is of importance around the world.

Gratitude

Until my father passed away in 1985 I did not realize how quickly his generation was leaving us. The WORLD owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who helped to bring WWII to a conclusion. Appropriately, within the Amateur Radio community we show our respect and gratitude by acknowledging their service as they leave us and, I hope, as we continue to meet them on the air.

 

My father too, was of that generation. He was a Command Sgt Maj when he retired. I feel your pain....... God Bess
