View Full Version : Rats.
Quote[/b] ]Since the rats' arrival, New York has been fighting the hardy creatures with all manner of traps, poison and public education campaigns. But no matter what they do to beef up rodent control efforts, city officials acknowledge that they harbor little hope of ever being able to eradicate the rat population.
In the 70s, they used to say that there were 10 rats for every person in the city. Now it's some of the only wildlife I get to see here. Especially in the subways.

If yous guys would just let a few more baby aligators down the sewers, there wouldn't be this problem. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

They used to have these super rats in the South Bronx. They could've won the rat olympics. They could climb in a window on the 13th floor, jump greater distances than a normal rat and warfarin didn't kill them.
Then there are the sewer rats. They can swim over a mile in the sewer pipes and come up in your toilet on the 6th floor. Nasty buggers. Just as nimble as a ferret and they won't hesitate to rip out your throat if cornered.

when I saw the title words " rats " I naturally thought some one was starting some name calling ( again...like last night ).
Strange how when folks are losing they have to resort to stunts like that.
Man I have been called ( shuffling papers ) a bunch of names through the years.

This is why I'd never live in New York. I saw a show once about this and there were even rats in the hotels. No thanks.

New York rats?
You must be kidding.
Come to Louisiana, come see our Nutria Rats.
http://nutrias.org/rat.jpg
Some dogs run from these critters.
We had rats at Driftwood Bay on Unalaska Island, but those were the only rats I've seen in Alaska. The Eagles, Owls, Wolves, Otter, Woverine, Lynx and varmint hunters can only dream of rats in most of Alaska.

Rats in NY sewers. Reminds me of and old bunch of kids movies from the 80's where a giant mutated rat trained mutated turtle to become ninjas. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

...and that thing is a RAT??!! #Hooooolysmokes...
Nutria is Spanish for otter. The nutria is much like a small beaver. The Nutria does not have a big, flat tail like a beaver.

Rats can be as big as a Welsh Corgi, you need a bigger beast to knock them off, like a trained Pitbull to do the job.
Otters are awesome BTW. True story follows:
Dave, a coworker of mine at Cold Bay, used to live in Takotna where he often volunteered to exercise sled dogs. One day he was harnessing some dogs when they became quite excited and four of them got away from him, running down on the Takotna river after an otter. The otter was midway between two holes in the ice.
A sled dog can run more than twice as fast as an otter and weighs more than twice as much, so Dave was worried that a dog would be caught by the otter close to an open lead in the ice and the otter would drown the dog.
That didn't happen.
By the time the otter made it to the nearest hole, two dogs were dead, one was seriously injured, and the fourth dog was making tracks for home. Maybe that was an unusual otter, but it was incredibly tough when desperate. Dave thought the otter was injured but he didn't know how bad because it slipped into safety.
Maybe it's the salmon diet, but I'd put a 30lb Alaskan River Otter up against any New York rat.
In some parts of the world a large rat is considered a fine meal.
Maybe if New Yorkers ate more rats that would solve the problem.
Could be the new diet fad. I better get a patent on the infomercial rights....
Would the sewer rats have a special tanginess to the meat?

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif mebee eating a few " rat - burgers " would let you prove your manhood to the rest in the group / club .
Cooking dead rats over an open flame might even be more popular than possums ...some barbq sauce smeared over them MIGHT even become a delicacy.
You folks might be on to something....pending FDA approval. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I've found that Nutria recipes abound on the net. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I can only guess that perhaps it might taste something like rabbit...?

The 'super rats' of the 70s were known to eat cats. I'd hate to stack a couple of kittens against one.
I did know a Navajo shaman who domesticated wild sewer rats though. She also had a large number of copperheads, water moccasins and rattlers. And one very large python. When the explosion hit here, she took her rats and ran. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
