I have heard of a few telemarketing firms setting up phone banks within prisons or using inmates on work release.

I also remember a story a few years ago about prisoners using their phone priveleges to run credit card scams from prison.

I am sure things like this are not the norm in prisons across the country but in a lot of ways over the years laws have been perverted to where inmates have more rights than law abiding citizens and have plenty of time to come up with new ways to <s>extort</s> exercise these loopholes.

The one that always threw me was a prison I lived near in Northern California. Most of the inmates were from Southern California. The idea was that if they were to escape they would not know the area and would be easier to apprehend. The problem I saw with this thoery is that one of the vocational shops in this prison was in the business of printing maps. I don't know if they printed maps of the local area but it sure seemed a bit odd.

I always thought jail / prison time should be to try NOT to commit another crime when / if you got out

not plan the next crime spree.
