Ever have a song that you can't get off your mind? It just goes on and on, round and round, and it comes out here <points at mouth>??

For some reason I can't get this ditty off my mind:

CHEEK TO CHEEK
Irving Berlin

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak.
And I seem to find the happiness I seek,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And the cares that hung around me through the week,
Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh, I love to climb a mountain,
And to reach the highest peak.
But it doesn't thrill me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Oh, I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek.
But I don't enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek.

Dance with me! I want my arms about you.
The charms about you
Will carry me through to...

Heaven... I'm in heaven,
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak.
And I seem to find the happiness I seek,
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek.

---and I thought it was Heaven. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Gee, you're good! I can almost always remember melodies, even from songs I heard once a long time ago, but the words never seem to stay with me. I guess that is why I was training at one time to be a professional instrumentalist! No WORDS!

Since I do have a musician's heart, I wake up almost every morning with at least one song going on in my mind. This morning, I was recalling music from "Oklahoma", including some songs that Rogers and Hammerstein never composed ( if you catch my drift ! )

Well, I'm glad to know that I am not the only person blessed with this . . . . whatever you want to call it ! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

73, and keep hearing those songs. It's a lot better than what goes through the minds of SOME people !

Well, there's always 'scat'.

For tunes that run forever in your head -- how about:

"I'm 'enery the eighth I am
'Enery the eigth I am I am
I got married to the widow next door
She's been married seven times before
And every one was an 'enery
There never was a Willy or a Sam
I'm 'er eighth old man I' 'enery
'Enery the eight I am

Second verse, same as the first..."

...and I think you know the rest! #I believe it's called "Seek You, Seek You, I Seek You." I forget who wrote it, but it's rather well-known around here.

That's interesting! My Uncle told me a story once of his days in World War II. They were getting ready to invade Okinawa, and as they were boarding the landing craft from his troop ship, the loudspeakers were playing a song from "Oklahoma" over and over; "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" I thought that was interesting and more than a little wierd.

Song in my head? "Mars" from the Gustav Holst suite "The Planets." It's been in my head all day, and I just can't get it to stop....

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide
No escape from reality;
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see...
I'm just a poor boy,I need no sympathy
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high,little low...
Anyway the wind blows, doesn't really matter to me,
To me.

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.
Mama oooh
Didnt mean to make you cry;
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come:
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.
Mama oooh
I don't want to die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all...

I've had Bohemian Rhapsody going through my mind at least a few minutes each day for years.

I think it's a sign.

Maybe it means, "NO PARKING." http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Pink Houses, John Cougar Mellencamp

There's a black man with a black cat livin' in a black neighborhood
He's got an interstate runnin' through his front yard
You know he thinks that he's got it so good
And there's a woman in the kitchen cleanin' up the evenin' slop
And he looks at her and says, "Hey darlin', I can remember when
you could stop a clock."

CHORUS:
Oh but ain't that America for you and me
Ain't that America somethin' to see baby
Ain't that America home of the free
Little pink houses for you and me

There's a young man in a t-shirt
Listenin' to a rockin' rollin' station
He's got greasy hair, greasy smile
He says, "Lord this must be my destination."
'Cause they told me when I was younger
"Boy you're gonna be president."
But just like everything else those old crazy dreams
Just kinda came and went

:|| CHORUS

Well there's people and more people
What do they know know know
Go to work in some high rise
And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico
Ooh yeah
And ther's winners and there's losers
But they ain't no big deal
'Cause the simple man baby pays for the thrills, the bills,
the pills that kill

That and: (If you dont know this song, please dont reply until you learn!)

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Hold on
I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Hold on

Can you feel it coming in the air tonight
Hold on
Hold on

Well if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I've seen your face before my friend
But I don't know if you know who I am
well I was there and I saw what you did
saw it with my own two eyes
so you can wipe off that grin
I know where you've been
It's all been a pack of lies

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Hold on
I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Hold on

Repeat

Well I remember
I remember
Don't worry
How could I ever forget
It was the first time
The last time we ever met

But I know the reason
Why you keep this silence up
No you don't fool me
Well the hurt doesn't show
But the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me

I can feel it coming in the air tonight
Hold on
I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Hold on

I can feel it in the air tonight
Hold on
I've been waiting for this moment
For all my life
Hold on

Excuse me while I groan indignantly and inform you that "Dead Puppies" was by Ogden Edsl, NOT Weird Al Yankovic. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

By the way, there's actually a name for a song that gets stuck in your head - it's called an "earworm." #And I've got enough of my own personal earworms to stock a large bait shop. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif #One prime example - at least the chorus, if not the whole song - is "If Love Should Go" by Streets. #[Google it.]

Def Leppard's "Love And Affection" can run laps in my cranium for hours at a time as well. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Edit: Actually, any song I like - and that's a very large list! - can become a personal earworm. Some songs are just more likely candidates than others. Even entire albums can become earworms - Billy Squier's "Don't Say No," for instance.

Any anime fans here who might be familiar with the song "Ready Steady Go" by L'Arc en Ciel, used as the opening theme for Fullmetal Alchemist? THERE'S an earworm for ya! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif So is "Asia no junshin [True Asia]" by Puffy [that's what they're called in Japan, anyway - over here, they're "Puffy AmiYumi" 'cause Peepee-Doody-What's-His-Name already has a claim on "Puffy"].

One more random earworm from way out here in left field - "Ocean Man" by Ween. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

That song was one of my mother's favorites. She used to sing it all the time when I was a kid.

Do the words sound queer;
and funny to your ear;
a little bit jumbled and jivey.

Just sing:
Mares eat oats.
Does eat oats.
And little lambs eat ivy.

Somebody once told me
The world was out to roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking mighty dumb
With her finger and her thumb
In the shape of "L" on her forehead

Well the years start comming
And they don't stop comming
Fed to the rule so I hit the ground running
Didn't make sense not to live for fun
Your brain gets smart but your head gets dumb
So much to do so much to see
So what's wrong with taking the back streets
You'll never know if you don't go
You'll never shine if you don't glow

Hey now, you're an all star,
Get your game on, go play
Hey now, you're a rock star
Get the show on, get payed

Only shooting stars break the mold...

Dang cool song, that one! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

"Somebody once asked
could I spare some change for gas?
I need to get myself away from this place.
I said yep, what a concept,
I could use a little fuel myself,
and we could all use a little change"

You should hear the way I tweaked the end of that song in GoldWave. #It's kinda interesting.

Three earworms by a band you've probably never heard of: "Popsong," "Automatons," and "Clean" (http://www.anythingbox.com/files.htm) by Anything Box.

I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

The other day, I stayed a little late at work to do a little work on the home computer...a coworker asked what kind it was and I sang "I've got the Gateway from Hell". The next day, he said that particular AC/DC song with my changed lyrics ran through his head all night http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Sunny Day
Sweepin' the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet

Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame Street

Come and play
Everything's A-OK
Friendly neighbors there
That's where we meet

Can you tell me how to get
How to get to Sesame Street

It's a magic carpet ride
Every door will open wide
To Happy people like you--
Happy people like
What a beautiful

Sunny Day
Sweepin' the clouds away
On my way to where the air is sweet

Can you tell me how to get,
How to get to Sesame street...
How to get to Sesame Street

Led Zeppelin stairway to heaven, that song goes round and round in my head and i often end up singing it when i drive up and down the motorways in my lorry.

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a sign on the wall but she wants to be sure
And you know sometimes words have two meanings
In the tree by the brook there's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

And it makes me wonder

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May Queen

Yes there are two paths you can go by
but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on

Your head is humming and it won't go because you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady can't you hear the wind blow and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll
Woe oh oh oh oh oh
And she's buying a stairway to heaven

There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
And when she gets there she knows if the stores are closed
With a word she can get what she came for

And she's buying a stairway to heaven.

The theme music to the "Poirot" mystery series. I've been watching some of these on DVD, and the tune continues to stick in my head.

If you've watched any of the "Poirot" episodes on PBS or A&E or seen any of the feature movies, then you know to what I'm referring.

I also finally got a copy of the flying lizards “Money”

One from the vault: "I Will Love You Tomorrow" by K.C. and the Sunshine Band. I don't think it was a radio hit - or ever got any airplay at all, for that matter - but it's an excellent song nonetheless. In the same vein, there's also "I Haven't Stopped Dancing Yet" by Gonzales.
