Can anybody tell me his or her recipe for mashed potatoes? I am looking for a dish that has no taste and is totally bland, as I don’t want to offend anybody at an upcoming party.

Any ides?

Buy a box at the grocery store and follow the directions. That is what I do.

No, too much taste. I want to cut the heart out of those potatoes. Bland baby.

My mom's recipe has salt, pepper, butter, and canned milk. [And potatoes, of course!] I don't know the amounts, though - she says her grandmother's main culinary method was, and I quote, "by-guess-and-by-gosh."

The bare-bones basics? Peel, chop, boil, drain, mash. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't want to seem too bold OM, but I believe the best mashed potatos are dug out of the ground, washed, peeled, and then physically mashed.

But your way of doing things is just as valid as mine, and I respect you for your differing opinion.

Would it help if I grew the potatoes in a glass jar?

To make mashed potatoes you boil a good quantity of good quality pealed potatoes until they are soft. #Then you drain the water from them and put them in another pot which has butter or a good quality of oil on the bottom of it. #Under gentle heat you mash the potatoes with the flat tool that is called a potato masher. #Milk or a small quantity of water may be added at this time to make for smoother density. #This can take a while as you want to make smooth mashed potatoes. Optionally add salt and pepper to taste. # Some folks also like garlic powder. # I don't like the packets of dehydrated powder that can instantly make mashed potatoes. # Freshly made potatoes always taste better. # If need be they can be heated up in a microwave oven. #Do not try to reheat them in the pot that they were made in unless you want them to get singed or excessively dry.

There is nothing that you can do to make bad mashed potatoes except burn them or not add enough butter and/or oil. # You can substitute a good brand of margerine but it won't taste as good as butter.

w2ilp (Inhibit Lumpy Potatoes)...Don't blend or offend...Just keep mashing. #Serve gravy on the side for those who want it. #Don't ever use chicken shmaltz....or any ingrediant that won't keep the final result white.

Fix hash browns or fry some sliced fresh potatos. Lots less work and much better tasting. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Wow, that sounds good but perhaps too controversial for my group.

Hire a PC potato <s>moderator</s> food critic. #You know, can't have too much mexican spices, the Italians might get offended. #Can't have to much Italian seasoning. The Indians might be offended. #You get the idea.

PS - They are mashed potatos - they have been mashed, a noun. Mash potatos would be the act of mashing them, a verb.

a good 2 inch thick rib eye steak would be a lot better alternative to smashed tomatoes. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Go to you local KFC and buy a bunch of tubs of mashed potatos. No cooking at all.

Nice use of the strikethrough. I can never figure that out.

Yeah, I was thinking of adding a touch of wine but didn't want to offend the temperates.

A better idea. Two bowls of mashed potatoes. One the store brought bland stuff. The other farm freshed mashed potatoes with garlic. See which one they will try.

If you intend to make mashed potatoes for Jewish people who want to keep kosher...you must know in advanced if you are making it for a meat or a dairy dinner. #You know you can not mix the two. #If you want to make mashed potatoes that can go with any kosher meal you can't use butter or milk nor any animal fat. # You must use kosher margerine and/or oil and water...or you might offend those who don't mix millidicks with fleishedicks.

No offense meant. # You can't mash potatoes with Red Rider rifles or you'll shoot their eyes out.
It is also offensive to say that a seven course Irish dinner consists of a six pack of beer and a potato..

Tomatoes and potatoes become tomato and potato when made singular...unless you are running for vice president....and can't call the whole thing off.

w2ilp (I Like Potatoes)...because they have no bones.

Way to clever ILP. Watch yourself or you will be joining the land of the banished. Although, I think they must be having a great party their tonight as the best of us seem to have recently made that trip.

You must first peel organic potatos but don't grasp them too tightly or stroke them too harshly as this would be considered assault.
Next boil a large amout of water but don't actually let it rise to a boil as this would be too violent as well.
After they have softend (about two and a half hours) you must gently apply pressure with the palms of your washed and strerilized hands. Do each potato one at a time before you place them on a serving dish.
If they still have any taste at all you must not serve them and you will be admonished for wasting potatos.
Instead of serving mashed potatos you may just need to offer room temperature tap water.

I’m a little disturbed by your use of the words “do” and “stroke.” Perhaps you should consider revising to make your post more palatable for the rest of us.

As I understand it, excessive use of an electric mixer does something to the starch that just turns the whole mess into glue, basically, and there's absolutely no fixing it after that.

I seem to recall that being mentioned this past night-before-Thanksgiving on NPR - they were interviewing the author of a book about holiday dinner disasters [over-stuffed turkeys practically exploding in the oven, that sort of thing].

Mashed potatoes; not a subject to be treated lightly. It is essential that the CORRECT varieties of potato are selected, don't use any old spud! Maris Piper are a popular choice, as are Sante and Cara. The real experts prefer Champion from Ireland, and those who seek novelty are talking about Yukon Gold, though the traditionalists would prefer to pretend it doesn't exist.

If truly outstanding blandness is sought, any old rubbish from the supermarket shelf should be boiled for an hour and then mashed in its own juices with a helping of powdered milk.

Stewing in its own juices, a sure cure for dominant flavors (note the courteous nod to American spelling!)

http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif I am guessing that we could look at it with the " past / present / future tense " of the english language.

I have a potato ( not mashed yet )
I mashed the potato
I ate the mashed potato

An individual can MASH a potato
an individual has mashed a potato
an individual has eaten the mashed potato.

Sure, I know this does not solve any thing, but it does let us know it in a different way.

enjoy your potato, or enjoy it mashed.
