Quote[/b] ]An explosion and fire leveled a residential building on New York's Upper East Side Monday morning. New York Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta told CNN the cause appeared to be a gas explosion.

I've been to a few of those gas explosions in a building. They are pretty devastating. It's amazing what a 5 gal. propane tank can do when the conditions are right.

This was more then a 5gal tank. Was allover CNN on tv. Builing is totally down. Fire officials are "speculating" that this was a suicide attempt by the owner of the building. Saw that on CNN. Apparantly he survived.
Suicide by gas explosion?
Yikes!

What I read is that the collapsed building was owned by a medical doctor. #The doctor was being forced to sell the building because of a divorce situation. #It is assumed that he decided to commit suicide and take his building with him. #He purposely leaked gas that caused the explosion.
The Drake equation says that there must be high IQ ETs somewhere in the universe besides here on Earth. #Thus according to Drake, if there are enough of anything anything can be expected. #There are 9 million people in New York City (plus no one knows how many tourists and illegal allians...maybe even ETs) ...thus the possibility of crazy suicide cases are greater in NYC than elsewhere...The possibility of suicide terrorists is also greater in NYC. #Thus NYC needs more money for homeland security than places like Lincoln, Nebraska [just an example], where it might only be probable for the craziest people to be hams.

There's little propane here. Most 'gas' is Natural Gas which is probably as explosive. They add skunk scent to it since it is odorless.
I don't know if it was the moon or what, but the reason more weren't killed is this doctors staff was late getting to work. His receptionist was supposed to be there at 8, but arrived late because of delays on the 'R' train. Why was that?
Because someone jumped in front of the '4' train at the start of the rush hour (6:30 AM) shutting down that line. Everybody was transferring to the 'R' to try to get to work.
She was walking down the block when the building blew up.

Propane or natural gas explosions can be very powerful.
I have seen a number over the years where an entire building simply "dissapeared" into small kindling wood from such an explosion.
We just had two people killed in this area from such an explosion. # Happened in the early morning hours when NO construction crews were working in the area (0130AM)
A single such explosion could easily be blamed on a gas leak, furnace turning on, etc. # HOWEVER here there were THREE (3) seperate explosions, #more than a few minutes apart, And at least a full city block between buildings! # (There are NO natural gas lines in this area)
Makes you wonder what is going on...........

The local paper refers to it as a "single" explosion......

Looks like there may be the possibility of foul play, maybe some kids fooling around not knowing the dangers. A block separating the buildings and no common gas connection? It just doesn't add up. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Even a little spilled gasoline can produce incredible results. We had a case in San Jose years ago. A fellow's car was leaking gasoline in his garage. When the poor guy opened his garage door, the wind blew the gas fumes into the building's water heater's pilot light and bada-bing, bada-boom,boom,boom. They found the poor guy imbedded in the garage door of the house across the street, which was quite a distance away. The house and parts of his neighbor's were demolished.
We had another one where a fumigation company had tented a whole house, and forgot to turn off the gas. A spark ignited the whole thing, and it took out most of block.
