In our county, about 4 years ago they replaced the old 500-lb boat-anchor mechanical voting machines that had been used for years, with new electronic ones, at thousands of dollars per machine. But this year, it was decided that the electronic ones had become obsolete, so they have all been replaced with still newer ones in time for the next upcoming election. That means the first set of electronic voting machines, which weren't cheap, were used maybe a half-dozen times before being replaced with still more expensive newer ones.

I am wondering if maybe the old fashioned, low-tech paper ballot and wooden box with the slot in the top isn't a better idea.
