NAQP is coming up again this August, and Mike N3CA and myself are planning to do yet another Youth Team operation. We will be using the name "Young Hotshots" again and we are looking for teamates. Anyone General class or above is welcome to join us for the SSB contest (1800Z August 19 to 0600Z August 20, 2006), and those Tech Plus, Novice, Tech With Code, and general and above may be interested in operating the CW contest (1800Z August 5 to 0600Z August 6, 2006) may also want to do a team. I am not certain if N3CA will be operating the CW contest or not, I am not currently planning but I may re-consider (OWO on CW, scary thought). Also there is a RTTY contest (1800Z July 15 to 0600Z July 16, 2006) which I may operate if I find a good RTTY app (for Linux mind you) and can get things going with my RIGblaster M8.

However, in the meantime, Mike and I are looking for operators to join our team (or teams, as 5 people are allowed for teams, and there are no limit on the number of teams). This is a great chance to show the world that there are youth out there!

The youth teams began with Mike and I chatting one evening on the net, and he asks me if I want to be on a Youth Team. I say "Sure" and so we get together with N4CV and AE6NY with team "No Old Men Allowed" earning a combined total of 142,758 points placing 8th out of 32 teams in the August 2005 NAQP SSB contest.

Here are are claimed scores for the 2006 contest:

Young Hotshots #1:
N3CA(@N3HBX) 174,125
KB0VVT 112,530
N4CV(@NI1N) 86,400
W2AU 51,058
KC2NMZ 28,704
Team Total: 452,817

Young Hotshots #2:
KD7TDC 35,956
KD5OWO 28,960
KG4IUM 11,446
AE6NY 9,514
W4UAF(KG4USK) 220
Team Total: 86,096

*ears perk up* Did somebody say contest?!

I'd certainly be interested in operating. Hopefully I'll have a different callsign by then... goin' for the Extra on Thursday... but I'll put up the antenna and get on the microphone at the very least. Not sure about the CW though...

Good luck Thursday on the Extra, I am sure you will do fine! When you get your new call I will update the list. I assume you will be operating from home. We will be glad to have you operating on the "Young Hotshots" team for the SSB contest.

Mike still hasn't emailed his "mailing list" so we don't have the other team mates who operated with us last year "booked" for this contest. However, we may be looking at 3 teams.

I will keep everyone updated here, and hopefully some other young guys with HF access will be interested in joining up with us.

Okay Andrew, I put you on team #2 assuming we we get some other operators. However, a team requires at least two people. If we don't get anyone else, I still encourage you to work the contest.

Everyone who ops NEEDS to read the rules http://www.ncjweb.com/naqprules.php

So, if we have multiple ops on the RTTY contest, will there be a Young Hotshots team for that contest?

Mike and I are not planning to operate that contest, however, if you and atleast one other person wanted to operate that contest you could use the "Young Hotshots" name, that isn't a problem. Team Registration is on the NCJ website or if you would like I could just organize and register the team(s).

Same with the CW contest, which I had Amy/KD7TAX ask about. I will warn everyone interested in oping CW, they run 20wpm+ during the contest ; however, for anyone interested in operating you are again welcome to form a "Young Hotshots" team.

This is a good time for those who are into Digital, CW, and SSB to get together and do some operating. My goal in all of this is to keep the spirit of amateur radio and the youth alive.

There is the current team.. if anyone of you are dropping out please let me know, but I encourage those who can to operate. I would love to be in there with all of you but I must make money.

That is this week, registering the teams tomorrow evening, so please get with me if there are any changes. If anyone else is interested in joining, let me know. Also Canada stations are also welcome to join the contest.

Good luck, go out there and have fun and do a good job!

Hey guys,

Making the assumption that Canuck stations /ARE/ allowed, I'll run the contest, I've got pretty piss poor antennas (due to proerty restrictions) but it's primarily for fun right? and any contacts will count towards the total...

So yeah put me down for sure (assuming you get one more person) and I'll check back tommorow at 6pm mountain to find out if I'm running the contest (I'll only do it if I'm on a team, sadly I've not got the time to mount a decent effort on my own http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif )

so yeah count me in...

Cheers and 73's

But is the Extra the middle class or the top class?

either way go make HF antennas! they're the most fun to build!

yeah I have to work on the saturday night at 11pm local which is when I have to start work so I'll be able to work a good chunk but not the whole thing, so I guess it'll just be for fun then http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Oh well, if you need to contact me drop me a line, at: d_chernenkoff[at]hotmail[dot]com (I don't like my email picked up in the spammers bot sweeps http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif ) that's also my msn, I've read the rules for the contest it's very straight forward contest but I'm not sure how the team aspect works, do I use my own call? is there a team call we're using? or is it an individual effort and whatever QSO's I make also count towards the team?

I'lll be honest I've done some contesting but never as a team seperated by dx...

David -- I will be registering the teams with your callsigns. So use your own callsign. On your log form make a spot in the summary for "Team: Young Hotshots". It is an individual contest effort in which at the end they talley up the points for the teams and rank the teams.

Sorry Bill... I was planning to get off work and get home but I ended up having to work till seven. I got home around 7:30 with a few hours left in the test but I didn't feel like turning on the radio after being gone from the house for over 12 hours.

I sincerly hope that you all did very well, and had a ball in the contest.
(I would have liked to log at least one of 'ya though. and give you a PA multiplier, but I'm sure you got PA anyhow)

I managed a WHOPPING 160 contacts.....

I was able to manage 15 contacts in four hours!!!!!!

yep, after four hours (and yes I WAS trying, it's just that my station sucks so badly) I said screw it and submitted my log....

yep final score of 150...

But I had fun, and I'll gladly do it again!

Conditions just weren't great that day. Sorry to hear you only made 15 contacts in 4 hours. I know how frustrating that must be. There is a NA Sprint coming up soon, maybe you'll be able to get on that one and do better? I managed 157 QSOs in about 3 1/2 - 4 hours time. I wish I could of worked more, but I caught the contest a couple of hours after it began, and had to be at work at 11pm that night so I had to cut out around 6pm and get some sleep. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I had a lot of fun even if I was just a solo op.

We are always looking for new teammates. While contesting is on hold for me while I go ot school and work every weekend, January begins the next round of NAQP contests and coming up on the 15th is the RTTY contest for NA Sprint.

Anyone wanting to organize a youth team can do so on the NCJ website (www.ncjweb.com). While I can't really make any serious contesting efforts, I hope to see some other youth who perhaps have some free time attempt some of the contests. Invite your friends over, show them radio and control op for them. Even if they don't jump into radio after a weekend contest, it would be a great experience for them and atleast they would learn something new.

Also, if you have any stories to share, feel free to post them on the Youth forum.
