View Full Version : The Ebay Auction of the Month Club winner!
Once in a while there is an ad on ebay that is TOO far off the wall and needs to be ridiculed. This is but one of them, and wins the cupie for the month of June. This is probably not a good way to attract other hams as potential bidders! What do you think...10-4??!<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ICOM-746-Amateur-Radio-Like-New_W0QQitemZ180000792563QQihZ008QQcategoryZ1501QQ ssPageNameZW

Lol.. took me awhile to figure out what was "wrong with this picture", I was looking at the wording.
At least he's not on "freeband" heh

I suspect it's intentional.
They are probably selling it because they can't figure out how to make it transmit on that frequency!

Clip the blue wire. (They ALWAYS clip the blue wire in the movies, right?)

Think it depends on whose side you are on. I thot it was cut the red, or was it yellow? Oh well, trial and error--

Some poor schmuk will buy it and fire it up on CB. Personally I think the seller ought to be shot but it's a free country.

I had to look for a minute also before I found the "what's wrong with this picture?" but fortunately I read "Highlights" a lot as a kid. You guys are right, that's no accident.

Aw come on now, what's wrong with listening to channel 40???
See, here's a rig that's been modified. Wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. (See the thread on this one elsewhere.)
Heck of a lot of radio to be using on the chicken band, but hey, there's nuts everywhere. And besides, chances are he's a ham too.

No; an Icom 7800 is a lot of radio to be using on CB.
There were a couple of requests on CB-related boards for just such info.
Whoda thunk it?

He's only LISTENING on channel 40.
That little 100 watt pea shooter wouldn't even TICKLE his amp!
How does that blatant disregard for the rules stay on eBay ?
I see amps there for CB all the time, moded rigs that are obviously intended for 'freeband' use, or illegal CB use like this one, and NO it was not some accident that he is showing Ch 40s frequency.
Out of 3 million frequencies on HF, isn't that just a BIT of a coincidence...?? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I have been licensed a long time and will be eligible for QCWA soon. Was on CB in the early 70’s got bored so studied for my tickets and running 99.5 CW now because in a lot of ways SSB reminds me of CB.
The mind set on the amateur bands especially the older hams is one of an elitist, and even the ones who took the extra class test BEFORE the FCC did what they call dumbed it down. So now we have a sub elitists group within the ranks of amateur radio.
That said forget about the CB ers that are loathed but look no further than your back yard to find the elitists telling you to get off his frequency or stating unless you have 1500 watts he can’t hear you and tells everyone else he can’t hear you.
Elitist indeed, something I never found playing in the chicken band with all the small people.

Do you suppose he would have done better if he'd tuned it to, say, 14.275 or 14.313? http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
I'm sorry, but if you want nuts on Ebay, check out this one:

$500 for a SB-200. Give me a frickin' break. I bought one last week for $275....

NUTS is $308 for a Drake MS7 speaker...which went for that amount last May; shortly thereafter I bought one @ Dayton ('like new') for $50.
Just got another one last week for $35.00. It needed a $25.00 cabinet, as the old one's paint was faded.
I would assume if the ham wins it, that it will be use on the ham bands. Anyhow, that is SP6 land, so I doubt we will hear it if he does operate on 11 meters.

Well, I won't hear him, because I won't be listening on 11 meters. I will be too busy on 10 working DX.

Very true - or at the least, no one's listening.
Case in point - last evening. I keep receivers parked on a couple of popular 11M frequencies as a propagation indicator...for example, "when the 'Bowl starts rolling" (as the Ch. 6 gang says) I head up to 10 and begin looking for signs of life.
11M - sigs 20/S-9 from a number of areas in the U.S.
10M - Zip. Zero. Nada. Not one single beacon to be heard either.
But on Saturday during FD I worked stations on 10M until 1 AM.
Es is a fickle thing...
Now now folks. I'm sure he only listened there. Yeah right.

Just catching up on threads...
Wow, this seller is literally in my back yard, and I recall hearing someone on a local 2m repeater discussing this auction last week! Not sure if the winner is local or not...

What this proves is that pricing on E-Bay bears ABSOLUTELY NO RELATIONSHIP to the REAL WORLD!
So, when you go to a Hamfest and the seller displays a well used tuner, that went for $129.00 new, prices it at $200 and, says "that's what they are going for on E-Bay", just smile, and walk away.

That might shut the seller up.....till the next person shows an interest in it.
