Field Day 2006 is this coming weekend, what are your radio plans --

* at home, nothing special

* at home contacts all the way

* with local club socializing

* with local club talking / cw contacts

* none of the above

* since qrz dont do polls, you HAVE to use your imagination and provide your own special original answer. I know that will be rough for a few of you, but just do your best.

Me ? I plan to be among the elite folks who actually do morse code operation , and , since I can not operate a computer, let some one else do the entry of all the stations I communicate with ( both of them ).

The rest of the time I will be cooking ( no, possums are not on the list ) rib eye steaks, and maybe a T_bone or two. Problem is...I aint sure where I will be. I could be AT HOME, or FLORENCE, or HUNTSVILLE, or even ( gasp ) associating with the folks around Moulton ( my home town ). Yep, I will take my own food, so if I get food poisoning, it will be my own fault and not any one elses ( and NO I do not share ). Gasoline prices are around $2.61 per gallon as of Tuesday, so I can afford to ride around for maybe 100 miles if I even leave the house.

Plus the best part is that on the 26 of June I will be 48 years old ( calm down ) ...so those of you who have not sent me a card with money in it yet, there IS still time to beat the storage fees and get me a card for my birthday.

But field day is coming up this weekend...what will YOU be doing ...any thing special ?

As a rookie technician I am kind of limited as to what bands I can go on. My new found "love" is 6 meters. Hopefully the band will open up with some nice Sporadic E and I'll be able to make some contacts. I really won't be doing anything different. Maybe next year I'll have joined a club and I'll have somewhere to go. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Until then, I guess I can just put a little "more" emphasis on Amateur Radio, which is going to be quite hard considering it already consumes EVERY second of my life. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

I'll be on the late-night CW shift with W3OK, 2A EPA.

Well, I'll be there from setup right on through Sunday afternoon, but I'll be on the air probably sometime between 10PM and 4AM.

Have fun!

Plan A:

I'll sit on QRZ.COM for the full 24h and harass Robert and Greg.

Plan B:

I'll sit on the in-laws' patio - with the radios conveniently positioned on a table in front of me - and devour BBQ for the full 24h.

Plan on helping the AARC (local club) on Saturday, and visiting a friend on Sunday. Will probably be doing a whole lot of CW, and a little SSB. I would also like to see 6 meters open up for the contest.

Big horsey doings this weekend, but afterwards we plan to look for beginners sending slow code and give 'em a few 1D QSOs.

That's always ticked me off about FD. The newbies are wanting to make some CW contacts, but everybody else is charging along at 25+ WPM.

I had plans for some heavy work in the yard early Saturday, then visiting the local club's field day activities for a short time in the afternoon. However, the weather forecast is for heavy rain and thunderstorms, which pretty much cancels those plans. Looks like I'll be cleaning the floors instead, maybe some 1D operation when that's done.

Boy, I sure would like to have a laptop, but my soon to be ex-wife has ours, and I have the desktop PC.

Are PSK-31 contacts permitted in the contest? I would enjoy running a PSK station for the club, if I could "borrow" a laptop and install the software.

I'll be sitting right outside of Zion National Park with WI7J, N7KEC and K6MJB from California operating all bands from 80-2 meters.

Good part:The sunrise should be awesome.

Bad part: High temperature forecast at 109 degrres.

Listen for WI7J in Utah - might be me!

Well, I didn't think I was going to be able to have the 24th off... Got a couple of other officers on Workers comp right now so overtime is plenty... worked out well one of my fellow officers needed a day off next month and asked if I'd take his shift with mine that day and he'd repay the favor... so he's going to pick up my shift Saturday night so now I've got FD off until 4pm CDT Sunday afternoon.. I'll be 1 Delta Illinois since I didn't make plans figuring I'd be working.. perhaps next year a 2 Bravo or 2 Alpha station lol

YEs - 2 points per QSO same as CW.
I'm still debating if I am going to haul PSK crap up there..
Not much to haul really, since I am already bringing the laptop.

Severe weather would seem to be on tap for much of the Mid-Atlantic east of the mounts.

Cold front moving in and expected to stall over Maryland and No VA on Saturday, keeping big storms, high winds, lotsa lightning and torrential rains in forecast for much of the weekend and into beginning of next week.

VGX ... now I'm jealous, that is the best plan for Field Day I've heard yet http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Good luck reeling in the big one ...

The only thing I could think of that could top it would be portable from the Arctic Circle, Yukon or the NW Territories. Now THAT would be cool!

Maybe one day we'll do Field Day from here ... if I can talk the OM into it :-) I just don't think we'll get any extra points from visitors.

I suppose I could take the boat and work a solo FD effort from the annual bikini contest at the Dam Saloon, but I find all the nudity to be distracting while I try to log the contacts.

Neither! I love to rip along at 25, but willingly slow down if someone calls at lower speeds. But many of the newbies I've talked with say they feel like they're intruding if they send at slower speeds, or if they do try, they're most likely ignored.

1E from home.

Looks like my backup power system (another battery) is refusing juice, so I may have to buy a new one before the contest starts.

Last year, I had horrible luck with SSB and spent most of the contest in CW mode (fine by me). 80M through 70cm, but no 80M phone -- the 6BTV is tuned for the low end of the band.

At home, trying to get a couple groups the 100 pts bonus for sending an NTS message to the ARRL district coordinator.

(Hey, I get 10 pts per relay, so.. ;)

I'll likely pick up the 5-6 contacts I usually do.

Next year, I may go to one of the sites and really play, but that's it for this year..

Operating with our club under callsign W4AMI. Also camping out Saturday night (going to try and be on as late as possible working stations on HF) then finishing up Sunday.

Should be a fun two days aside from the 50 and 60% chance of rain for the days. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'm probably going to change things through the day.

Saturday afternoon, I plan to set up out in the yard, string up wire antennas for the occassion, and Battery, 5 Watts or less. So I would be a 1B.

But then saturday night, move indoors, but continuing to operate QRP on battery power. I think that being in the house would make me a 1E rather than a 1B, though.

However, if operating QRP with a low dipole turns out to be too frustrating, I might just fire up the 100 Watt rig & power supply and/or use my permanent antennas. Then I'd be a 1D.

I doubt it's allowed to change category during the contest. And I would not want to cause disallowed contacts and lost points to people, which might happen if my call shows up as 1E in some logs and 1B in others. So I think I'd have to to classify myself as 1D only, regardless of how I am operating at the time, since that would cover all the bases.

In any case, I'll plan to start out on 40 and 80meters, CW, QRP, battery power, and keying by hand (no memory keyer or computer generated CW macros), with low dipole, running portable out in the yard or on the deck and upgrade from there as the mood suits me. And I think I'll hand-log everything while operating (but enter the data into my logging program later).

I'll also work the "Novice" subbands and will be happy to slow down for anyone.

I'm FD Chairman for our local club - Alamo Area Radio Organization - and we'll be operating 3A STX. Looking forward to 70 or more AARO members and friends coming by and enjoying the fellowship. We'll be on the air as AA5RO. I hope we wind up in your logs.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL! I'm glad to see so many Zedders will be out there.
