The 12 Suggested Steps of CB'ers Anonymous

1. #We admitted we were CB'ers and that our operating styles have become undesirable.

2. #Came to believe that only the Power of Riley Hollingsworth could restore us to sanity.

3. #Made a decision to turn our will and my radio over to the policy of Self-Policing and become a Ham, as it is understood.

4. #Made a searching and fearless inventory of our closets, garages and, Radio rooms. #

5. #Admitted to "the skip Gods", to ourselves and to the world on QST the exact nature of our wrongs.

6. #Were entirely ready to remove (with the help of eBay) all defects of character, 10 meter export radios and 11 meter amplifiers.

7. #Humbly asked buyers to remove our shortcomings and defects in character from our possesion .

8. #Made a list of all persons and radio services we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.

9. #Made direct amends to such people and radio services wherever possible, except when to do so would cause physical or financial injury to me.

10. Continued to take personal inventory for myself and others that I hear on the air, when they are wrong, promptly admitted it.

11. Sought through wheeling and dealing on eBay to improve my Amateur Radio Station equipment.

12. Having had a sporatic E awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to other CB'ers and, to practice these principles in all our affairs.

Is that an amplifier in a washing machine?

o.O

That is the height of awesomely awesome awesomeness whatever it is. #If I ever homebrew a legal limit amp, I will put it in a washing machine if possible.

STEP # 13 --- never go back.

or as the good books says " lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil ( the citizens band ) .

Hey, when you become a licensed amateur radio operator, you get a whole new version of the 27 Mhz citizens band, but on the legal amateur frequencies ---called 2 meter fm repeaters.

It's great to see that if you're gonna use more power than the law allows that at least you're taking steps to make sure you have a clean signal!

It's 12 steps from my shack to the 220/3-ph breaker box which feeds the power-hungry amps contained therein...

...and one must be careful when building a PA in a washing machine. When grid leaks develop, the basement floor suffers! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Don't know about the 12 steps, but an oath that most CB ops should take when becoming hams is:

"I admit that everything I know about radios, communications, antennas and all other theory relating to this hobby is probably wrong because I learned it all from idiots; so, I'm starting over, today, and am open to learning everything from scratch."

That would pretty much do it.

Steve I was about to post something similar. Much shorter than 12 steps.

1. Forget every possible word or lingo that even could have been connected to CB.

2. Toss out all "knowledge" acquired through CB, including such highly technical concepts such as "swrs" and "pounds."

3. Destroy all CB radios, both legal and illegal.

4. Remember. You want to be a ham, not a CBer. You already done being one of them thar CBer thingies, ten-four? So now you want to leave all that behind and become a real ham.

5. Listen to ham radio. Learn the language and the customs. Do NOT join ham radio with the idea you will convert it to CB. We have earned the right to OUR language and traditions, and we do not wish to be blended into the 10-4 crowd.

6. Study. Get a license. OK, wait for the FCC to make a test you like, if you must, but keep in mind, those who take the current test because it is the one available when they want to be a ham, are the ones who earn respect on the air.

7. Do NOT get a handheld radio as your first/only radio!

8. Do NOT get a handheld radio as your first/only radio!

9. Do NOT get a handheld radio as your first/only radio!

10. Do NOT get a handheld radio as your first/only radio!

11. Keep this thought dangling in front of your eyes every second of every day: "The internet is not ham radio." While walking along the street or in the shopping mall, sing out that phrase loudly, even if people look at you oddly, and tend to give you extra space. It will be good for you.

12. Forget CB. Remember the Internet is NOT ham radio.

Steps 13 through 50: Remember: The Internet is NOT ham radio!

Seriously...

"AA" in this thread stands for "Alcoholic Anonymous". It was started by "Bill W." and has worked for recovering alcoholics for many, many years. He came up with a "12 step" program to quit drinking. Its very successful but it only works if you work it.

Bill W's 12 Step can also work for anything else that someone may feel "powerless" to stop.

Read the 12 Steps here. (http://www.recovery.org/aa/misc/12steps.html)

Sorry guys about getting off topic.
