Advanced Army R.O.T.C. (Ordinance Corps - Georgia Tech was a "branch material" school) but was waived from active duty because of vision (and this was at the height of Viet Nam - they were afraid I couldn't tell friend from foe if my glasses got broken).
You forgot the Merchant Marine. President Bush spoke at the 2006 graduation from the Merchant Marine Academy just a few days ago. That is the "forgotten" branch of the military.

USAF 1984-88
Graduated from DLI's Korean Language course at the Presidio of Monterey, then on to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX for more training, but it was found I had hearing damage (high frequency hearing loss and tinitus) so I spent the rest of my enlistment at Maxwell AFB, Montgomey Al, at the 1973rd Information Systems Group which meant data and comms. I worked in the data center for a while then went to the base comm center for the next couple of years.

USAF, 1958-1961. France, Morocco. Part of the time was in security police, much of the time was in HF (CW and RTTY) radio as an operator.
Civilian HF radio operator/technician, 1964. RTTY, CW.
Numerous places.
Had a good friend, a ham, in the merchant marine. He wound up as radio officer on the "new" (then) supertankers. I didn't have the courage to try it myself!!
Really thought about trying to get into the Coast Guard but by the time I got serious, I was too darned old.

We had two dogs, I don't remember their names but one of them went to Texas with one of the guys when he rotated.
The dog wouldn't stay at the sight and the town ppl were going to kill him so the guy took him home with him. Shortly after that I rotated and that is the last I heard of the sight.

USN 2/64 - 9/85 ETC(sw) -
{Electronics Technician Chief Petty Officer - surface warfare qualified.}
Sea duties: #WestPac and Med cruises + in country RVN
Shore duties: #Mobile Technical Units (MOTU's) -On call technician #
Ship types: # CV/CLG/FF/AS
Expertise: # Comm/radar/crypto/navaids/satcomm/misc. (on smaller ships with only 4-5 ET's you end up working on everything - OJT under duress.)
Specific training: #Surface search and Heavy air search radars, various crypto devices, HF transmitters, various multiplexing gear.
Most memorable moment: #Changing out a radar antenna drive motor in the North Atlantic. ##My LPO and I were strapped to the opposite sides of the radar mast, he had just unbolted the motor and I was holding it to my chest until the LPO could move further down the mast and I could lower the motor to him. #At that point we had a Russian Bear flyover and our idiot skipper, forgetting that we were aloft decided to show the junior officers how to manueuver the ship to avoid the Bear (don't ask - I don't know). #
The next thing that happened is that we went into a high speed left turn, heeling sharply starboard and yours truly was dangling over cold green water, handing on with one hand and gripping the 120 pound motor with the other. #Thank God for safety harnesses. #
Thanks to a well delivered throw of a 12" crescent wrench to the rear window of the pilot house by my LPO the old man came to his senses and righted the ship.
US Army 1968-1972. Drafted and stayed for one more enlistment as I thought it was a good idea at the time.
Served as a radio operator (O5B20) and instructor. Also took a try at being a Drill Instructor (OOF) but with the new all volunteer people just coming in I gave that up. Too many changes to deal with.

Because I was a ham and a licensed radio operator I was sent to signal school at Camp Gordon, GA after basic training.
The course I took was Field Radio Repair (MOS 1648). #It was a six month course but I completed it in 3 weeks. #I then got ordered to Korea where I served for 18 months. #The normal toure of duty was 16 months for all Army personnel...but could be longer if you had to wait for the next troop ship.
