Farmers urged to keep fertiliser locked up

A senior police officer appealed to farmers on Tuesday to lock up their fertiliser to stop it being stolen to make bombs. Agricultural fertilisers containing chemicals such as ammonium nitrate can be mixed with fuel or sugar to make extremely powerful home-made explosives. If farmers fail to take steps voluntarily to secure their fertilisers, the government might be forced to consider legislation to tighten controls.

Ammonium Nitrate goes plenty boom all on it's own.

Ask Wenatchee, WA. A hopper full of the stuff (186,000 pounds) cooked off. Nothing was left in the yard above the rail heads, and a good number of the windows in East Wenatchee blew out.

A wheelset from the car (near a ton) was found several miles away, and parts of the car body further yet.

Nitrate ANYTHING, and it becomes an explosive. What it is you convert to a nitrate is the only factor in how powerful of one.

The Federal Center in Oklahoma City was done in with a couple of tons of fertilizer, mixed with diesel.

And I'm sure you remember the images of the effect.

BTW, sugar is interesting when it comes to flammability. Turn a torch on the stuff, and it just melts into caramel.

But, flick a cigarette ash on it, and you can light it with a match.

It requires a catalyst to burn..

It's pretty bad when you have to lock your "s***" errr, (stuff) up because some nut won't leave it alone. Sounds like it is guard dog & shotgun time down on the farm again.
