For $200 to $300 the FT747GX is a good performer- has SSB, CW & AM filters as standard, general receive an optional FM module. The low dollar CW king is the Ten Tec Corsair- hams been catching on & the cost has been going up lately. The low dollar high performance receiver bargain is the TS-850SAT- as low as $700 in good condition, you will have one of the best ham receivers ever manufactured! Ten Tec OMNI D outperformed the Asian radio receivers in the same era- look for these at good prices. Ten Tec OMNI V is also a very serious receiver- prices are as low as $700. For $550 or so the IC-738 is loaded with features, do not over look this one. Good luck all & happy 'Hamming'.

I picked up an FT747GX with a 30amp PSU and an MFJ Versatuner for £250 (about $350?) It has the FM module and addition narrow CW filters installed too! I just love this radio and like to use it from time to time. A great starters rig or something to use in the car. I've worked VK on 10m mobile on it. I have seen the 747GX for sale for as much as £400 at some second dealers though.

The TS 850 SAT seems to hold price commanding £500+ here in the UK.

While the FT-747 is certainly a bargain when found another bargain is the Alinco DX-70T series of transceivers. 160 -6 meters,100+ watts out on HF, 10 on 6, very decent receiver, built in narrow filters for SSB and CW, very small package which works well mobile and portable and for prices between $350 - $400. Other good bargains out there include the IC-730, IC-735
Kenwood 120 / 130 series and the older TS520 series. I have seen Ten Tec Tritons go in the $200 range. Swan 350s and Cygnet 270s go under $200. It is probably more inexpensive than ever to set up a rather capable station.
