View Full Version : Missing GIs found
They just announced that the two soldiers that had been missing were kidnapped and then beaten and beheaded.
Most likely retaliation for the killings of the civilians by others

Time to one-up the natives.
Rumsfeld really needs to consult the old Soviet playbook on how to deal with these yahoos...

They probably are not natives.
More than likely they are Syrians, Egyptians, Jordanians, Saudis, or other such nationality.
Can't really call it revenge either, they were kidnapping and beheading for some time before the news of troop misconduct came about.
It is killing for the sake of killing. They will not stop till all the infidels (that is us and anyone else who does not buy into their brand of Islam) are converted or killed.

I can't solve a problem I wouldn't have created in the first place.
I didn't believe that the evidence presented by Colin Powell at the U.N. justified military intervention on our part (or anyone else's for that matter) in Iraq. It was weak, and it set off the crap detector.
Covert action in Afghanistan might have worked against the Taleban if we had had the intelligence that would have provided accurate targets to hit and people to neutralize. But we didn't, still don't, so that won't work, either. A full-scale occupation? Ask the British and the Russians about that strategy.
Going to war sets off many fuses leading to many consequences, most of which can't be foreseen even with the best of planning (and this war obviously didn't have the best of planning). One of the consequences we're now dealing with is an insurgency by native and non-native factions who are willing to engage in tit-for-tat cycles of violence. The Germans faced it in the occupied countries during WW2 (e.g., the numerous communist and other French freedom fighters who warred with one another as well as the Germans, Greek insurgents, etc., etc.).
I don't think there is a "solution" now since we don't really know what the problem is we're trying to solve...hence, the wheels on the war wagon go round and round....

Since you have a fourth district callsign, which "side" do you think should they have helped in that war?
Great Britain was sympathetic to the Confederacy (primarily for selfish economic reasons), almost to the point of officially recognising it as a sovereign nation.
Therefore, France probably would have tended to aid the Union, since Britain was their principal enemy prior to the 20th century, and this action would have been contrary to British interests.
That's the real reason why they aided the Americans during our revolution. They wanted to do anything they could to weaken Great Britain during the ongoing conflict between those two countries.

But we got Al Zarqawi. Isn't the Iraq conflict almost over and victory at hand?

My own "take" on the problem is that the USA is much too involved in foreign intrigues and adventures.
There is negative national interest in being "on point" for every one of the World's emotional crises...
We need to be just one of the gang. The trouble with our leaders is that they think leading is cool. The ones that think that the most strongly are the ones who have never been "on point" for an infantry patrol.
And of course you read all the outrage from the Geneva Convention crowd and the humans rights nut cases about how these great Americans were treated by the enemy. #
Whoops...sorry, they only get outraged when the Americans don't feed these animals the correct food or have their prayer rug pointed in the right direction at Club Gitmo.
Fact is, every American soldier captured by this vermin, has been murdered while there is absolutely no evidence that one of the captured enemy has been killed.
Just can't wait for the comments from the disgraced Jack Murtha on this one.

Well the protesters who protest everything about the war, well they protest against the inhumane killings of our GI's?

KYV:
Both France and the United Kingdom heavily favored the Confederacy. By that time they were allies against the German states (Germany did not become a nation until the 1870s).
However, there had been a "bumper crop" of cotton in the southern states in the late 1850s and both countries had at least a 2 years supply for their production needs. Also, India (the "Jewel of the British Empire") was starting to produce enough cotton to provide for British needs and the supply from North America was becoming supurflouous.
Also, in both countries the abolitionist movement was a very potent political force (more in the U.K. than in France). That is the primary reason that Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation effective 1 January 1863. This document effectively eliminated any official recognition of the Confederate States of America by either the United Kingdom or France since to recognize a "country" that advocated slavery would be political suicide for the governments of either country. To keep these countries officially out of the war was the primary reason that Lincoln issued the proclamation.
Others:
I agree that those who condemn things like occurred in the prison in Iraq (making the prisoners act like dogs, etc.) as being inhumane need to look at what the "terrorists" do to their prisoners (both foreign and domestic).

OK by me.
But of course that means relying on that fancified little debating society called the UN to handle situations around the world (they did so well with Bosnia, Rwanda, and Darfur). The problem with that is we'd still end up paying for it and our military would still be expected to do the majority of the fighting and dying. So what's the difference other than having to take orders from spineless bureaucrats like Kofi Annon?
The UN is like teats on a boar, totally useless.

I was against having the GIs there to be hurt in the first place, or to hurt Iraqis.
I was not, and am still not, convinced that bludeoning our way into Iraq, toppling its government, destroying its infrastructure, and alienating the native population was an effective strategy for defeating a terrorist organization based in Afghanistan. Neither did it seem to be connected with the Saudi extremists who commandeered the 9/11 aircraft.
The dots were never connected and still aren't connected.
I feel badly for the friends and family of the two young men. The brutality of their treatment was a War Crime if this is a War on Terror, and it was a murder if this is not.

It makes my blood run cold. What a horrible, horrible way to treat those two young men. I don't even want to imagine the anguish their families are feeling right now.
BTW, a book that will give you a pretty good idea about the relations between the Confederacy and France and England is "Memoirs of Service Afloat" by Raphael Semmes, the captain of the CSS Alabama, the famous commerce raider of the Confederacy. He talks at great length about visiting South Africa, Gibraltar and other English and French ports and the discussions there with officers and civilians from those countries and their views on the CSA and on slavery.
