View Full Version : National SOS Emegency Drill
A press release from Eric Knight, UP Aerospace's CEO and ham radio veteran (KB1EHE) declares the recent National SOS Emergency Drill in Connecticut a "remarkable success".
(The press release can be viewed at http://www.nationalsos.com/connecticutdrillresults.html)
Since every story has two sides, I was wondering if everyone who participated in the drill shares his sentiment?

I didn't hear a damn thing - in Middletown.
I understand the concept - but I don't get the "national network" with radios that get out only a couple miles - if your lucky.... or better yet.... if you get the other license.
I see it... I just don't get it.

Whole discussion about this in the "news" section. Redundant subject.
Multiple posts on the same subject, what a rarity here!
6 Meters "Baby, It's Magic" by KE5FRF
6 Meter's Es, in full swing By VE3GIB
6 Meters The Forgotten Band? by KB9ZLB
And that's just on Page 1!
Sorry Charles, I posted this before they posted their news story. I thought for sure they would have deleted this one by now.

He's a veteran ham op alright. Been a ham since 28 July 1999.
Most posts I see on this subject refer to it as useful in an emergency. Then they go on to discuss a major calamity and using these FRS toys in the relief effort. That wasn't my impression of the original idea.
I had the idea it was hoped that "people" (hams, React, whoever) would just leave their receivers on FRS 1 and be there in case someone needed emergency help on an individual basis.
Either way I don't see it being reliable but there are enough of the things that in an urban or suburban environment distance wouldn't have to be the limiting factor.
Still, not gonna fly in the long run.

Still something I'll do personally during any emergency. RACES is on 2 meters here, I have VHF/UHF receive, so I'd rather hear someone calling than not. However, drills, procedures and the like weren't exactly part of the idea. If it worked out nicely, good for them, but this is starting to sound like CB channel 9 on UHF.

That's pretty well the idea.
