View Full Version : Can we get the poll feature back?
Hey moderators,
How about allowing polls back on a trail basis? Give them some time, see how things go and if all is well leave the feature.
Some topics just scream for a poll.
Please? Pretty please?
I will say nice things about Dave for a week. I promise. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Are you in favor of returning the polling feature?
* Yes, bring it back
* No, we're better off without it
* Don't care, one way or the other

Sorry OM, but those polls got way out of hand and were a troll's delight.
NO. HELL NO.

Aw, come on KRP.
Tell you what, if the mods bring back polls I will not only say nice things about Dave for a week, I will act like a liberal for a week as well.
No conservative post from me for 7 days. Just liberal ones.
How can you pass up a deal like that?
The polls need to be re-programmed such that they don't bump to the top of the list every time a new vote comes in. If they would function as normal threads in that regard - only bumping when a new reply is added - I don't think we'd have the problems we did.
If this is "open source" software it should be trivial to change.

Since i can’t find what I want I shall tell a short story then paraphrase Glen.
There was an Australian ham a while back who started a thread in Q&A which was moved to T&O where he asked why he couldn’t start a poll.
There were several posts to that thread one was from Glen who explained that someone was flipping the board every few days by voting in all the polls that were in the forum and that only moderators or Fred can start polls anymore. {here comes the paraphrase} ‘Satan will be selling tickets #for ice skating before any of the moderators agree to start a poll.’
‘He further explained that a lot of members had PM and I guess even some had e-mailed him asking to have the pesky polls moved back to the bottom of the page. I remember that at one time there was more than one page of just polls, some were months old, when I opened up the rag chew forum.

I already found and sent the ikonboard parameter change to Fred.

Post like you mean it.
What would I, and many others do if you just, out of nowhere, started posting liberal thought? Give that some consideration.

If I have anything to say in the matter (and fortunately my opinion has a little bit of influence) then the only poll that I want to see is as follows:
Do you want polls to return to QRZ.com?
1. No
2. Hell No
3. When Hell freezes over
4. Over my dead body
5. No way
6. All of the above
You guys don't realize how much of a headache that the poll feature really is.
Glen, K9STH
What's the use of having polls when the discussion threads are pretty much polls in and of themselves. I think it'd just be redundant.

I agree, though. Want an opinion? Just ask for it. Not too many bashful folks here...

Gotta add my vote with Mr. Glen's stand. I guess if some of the polls that got started hadn't been just so rock stupid, I would be more inclined to be in favor of polls. Granted only a few folks spoiled things but boy did they spoil things.

EEI:
Actually, only staff members CAN (have the ability to) instigate a poll on QRZ.com.
There is no "may" involved because I think that any staff member who did instigate a new poll would be "tarred and feathered" by the remainder of the staff.
I know that I would be in the front of the line holding a ripped pillow!

"Peer pressure" takes care of the "may"!
Yes, the staff is "allowed to" as well as is "able to" instigate new polls. But, anyone who actually follows the "may" would immediately be "drawn and quartered" (at least verbally).

How about making a seperate area for polls and only polls. Enable them only in the one area. This would allow those interested to go to that area and play Zogby to their hearts content while not allowing the poles to bump up and take over the first three pages of the other forums.
Not that it would happen but any moderator guilty of moving a poll to one of the other areas would have to be dealt with harshly, probably something involving a high tree and a wet noodle. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif
Added in edit (the good zingers always come to mind after clicking the submit button.): Between a poll only forum and the youth forum, any guesses which one would become known as the kid's area?

You can always link to external sites that allow polls:
Do you like poles, err polls (http://synergisticnetworking.com:81/viewtopic.php?p=14#14)
We can have polls anytime we want. I was even tempted to grant Glen his wish when he wanted a poll on polling. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Seriously, I do not have anything against polls per se'. It is just the fact that they can be easily abused and make "mucho" work for the moderators.
Frankly, we have all that we can handle without worrying about the abuse that the poll feature caused.

And did you notice that POLL rhymes with TROLL?
It's more than a coincidence.
Polls? Foogeddaboudit. Useless. The stats are totally useless. If you have an issue to discuss, toss it the hell out there and let's beat it to death, turn it upside down, kick it around, and stomp on it as usual.
I'm glad some nitwit bumped all the polls to the top that one weekend. End result was we got rid of the damn things. Who needs 'em? Phooey.
Out.

I think polls are cool, and fun. Isn't this forum supposed to have a fun and entertaining side?
My suggestion would be to create a special forum for polls. Only one forum. The poll feature could be turned off for every other forum save this special one. In this way, people could start a poll any time they like, and it wouldn't matter if new replies to the poll "bump" it to the top, because the polls would no longer be "polluting" the other forums.
And if an individual does not LIKE polls, well, no need to go to that forum, steer clear, and for those of us who enjoy them, there they are.

Unfortunately, there would still be a need for a moderator for the "poll forum" because of the need to prevent those that violate the "rules of the road" of QRZ.com.
There would still be a number of people who would do everything in their power to delibertly violate the rules of the road and cause problems.
Frankly, the vast majority of polls that were started before were assinine if not worse. They were just an attempt by someone to appear to be humorous.

GLEN ..you have made four ( 4 ) seperate posts in this thread which is less than 2 full pages long.
Each time you have said " no ".
You have also stated reasons why it is NOT a good idea to have POLLS on this web site.
Yet folks are still ignoring your logic and reason and arguing with you.
It shows how they feel toward any authority figure. Those folks do not care how much of a hassle it is to moderate the polls, all they want is their monentary " fun " regardless of how much work you or any other moderator has to do to clean up the mess they make.
I would politely recommend that those folks who would like for POLLS to be done, to try this great / fabulous idea on another amateur radio website and see if they can trick / con the moderators / owners of THAT website into liking the idea.
Obviously the idea is not going to be accomplished at this site, so give it up, kids.
You asked your question...you got your answer.
Simple, effective and to the point. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thank goodness that ended with the polls. I wold not visit this site if there were assinine attempts to be humorous.

I still think ... well never mind.
But I am still proud of the poll I started last year about Charcoal vs Gas cooking.
Not because of the fact I started it, but because of some of the information others provided.
In particular - the video of the use of LOX to start the fire. Was that the University of Pittsburg? I really don't remember.
I emailed that video to my co-workers. The sound of wonder from multiple cubicles -
Priceless.
