View Full Version : North Korea To Test Missle That Can Reach the US
FEARS were growing last night that North Korea was about to test an inter-continental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States.
Japan warned there would be a "harsh response" from both Tokyo and Washington to any such test by the communist dictatorship.

News reports that I have say that the North Korean missile is NOT capable of reaching the US. It is a threat to Japan, South Korea and parts of eastern Asia only. It is not an ICBM.

Looks like a good time to test that anti-missle defense system.

We have to let the South Koreans build a missile now. Maybe Hyundai can build one with a 200,000 mile warranty.

I have seen news saying that it can probably hit Alaska and perhaps Seattle or other west coast parts of America.

The leader of North Korea, Mr. Kim (Kim Jung Il or Kim Jong Il or however you want to Anglicize it) is, to be polite, a bit flaky. I don't know what sort of peaceful pressure we can apply but maybe China will be willing to help, since they are making zillions of dollars from the US. Mr. Kim armed with a long-range missle AND nuclear warheads is scary, at least to me.
As far as the range, if it's capable of hitting Japan and they have a lot of conventional warheads or just one nuke, they can kill a LOT of people, do a lot of damage to the world economy and start one hell of a war. Would Kim attack Japan or South Korea? He's pretty nutty. Hopefully this problem can be resolved peacefully. We'll probably end up sending financial aid to North Korea as "be a good boy" money.

Yeah? #Who reported that? #CNN? #No need to get people worried now is there.
I say nuke em now, right now. #Stop these bulls__t niceties and nuke em. #If I were President, I would. #Stop beating around the Bush - do it, do it now. #You'd see Iran fall right in step with our way of #thinking immediately. #I can see that fanatic president over there say "Holy S--T", they really did it. #Then, "Ladies and Gentlemen", we have decided the Bush plan is a good plan and it will be implemented immediately. #Me? #Well, I'm long overdue for a vacation down at my villa. #See ya later. #Bye.#

I agree that Kim Jung is flaky...but he has to be like he is to control the North Koreans. He believes that if he doesn't act tough and have a large military force the South Koreans will take over North Korea (with the help of the US of course) I don't know if this is entirely crazy paranoia.. Normally we could explain that we wouldn't attack a small nation just on the basis of unproven rumors but after attacking Iraq that is now hard to do.
GWB is flaky when he calls any natuion an axis of evil. Evil might be bad but flaky is fuzzy.

Here is my information on the range of the North Korean missile (not from CNN but from COMBINED NEWS SERVICES.
... From length and diameter the missile appears to be larger and more sophisticated than the one North Korea tested in 1998. #With a range estimated at about 2,400 miles, it is capable of reaching Guam but not the U.S. mainland.
# Experts say that the missile would probably be capable of carying a satelite, rather than a warhead, which would allow North Korea to say it was a civilian endeavor rather than a military move. #It probably could not carry a nuclear payload, experts added, but the technology would be sufficient to mount a chemical or biological attack.
.....
#The North Koreans have been testing engines for a new missile since 2002. A successful test would bolster leader Kim Jong Il's assertations domestically that he is developing advanced technology for his people.

THere is no doubt that Kim Jong Il wants to make trouble for us and he thinks that the time is right to do so now when the U.S. is full of people with the same flaky paranoia that he has.

So now Japan is speaking for us? Is this the price we pay for our current president's father falling over and making a deposit in the Prime Minister's lap a few years ago?
I don't know what the exact wording was or if this is an accurate representation of it but Japan saying there will be a "harsh response" from the US doesn't carry a lot of weight. It's about as convincing as a little kid telling the school bully that his cousin will get him back.
Let's not forget, the thing to do these days is advertise that you are testing or have tested weapons capable of hitting the US. Hard to keep track but just a couple of months ago it was either North Korea or Iran or some other country that likes to push our buttons saying they had tested various "super weapons".

The problem with nuking North Korea pre-emptively over this missle is that we might get the same treatment from someone else. How many nukes from the old Soviet Union are unaccounted for or in an unsecure facility? China is supposedly our pal right now, but what if the situation changes in the future? How many nukes does China have? How many of them would it take to destroy us? I would rather keep the nukes in the holster for now and see if we can find a peaceful end to this. It could be a hoax on their part anyway. We fought North Korea (and China) once, and it wasn't an easy one; ask any Korea War vet.

A few fighters escorting a C-130 with a "Daizy-Cutter" in back rigged with guided parachutes dropped on their nuclear/military facilities should slow 'em down a bit. Not a nuke, but the closest thing to it. Leaves a crater and a swath several hundred ft. accross. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

Will Kim Yong Il recieve a threat from Hans Blix of the United Nations, saying that the U.N. will become VERY ANGRY at him - and send him a letter telling him how angry they are?

North Korea wont be a problem too much longer. This is the last desperate move of a government that is near collapse.
a few tomahawks should set NKs missile program back a few decades.
