Quote[/b] ]-- Forty-seven percent of Seattle's adults hold bachelor's degrees, the strongest proportion of college-educated residents in any big city. It's nearly double the U.S. average of 24.4 percent.

-- Seattle is second to Washington, D.C., in the share of people with advanced diplomas. Twenty-one percent of Washington's adults have earned graduate or professional degrees, followed by Seattle at 17 percent. The national average is 8.9 percent.

So here we go again, equating levels of institutional education with intelligence.

Gimmie a break!

If you are just talking percentages, I think Kuparuk would best any of those cities for having the most credentialed idiots.

The United Nations says, (http://www.undp.org/poverty/publications/wkpaper/wp3/wp3-grif.PDF)
"Increasing the number of taxi drivers with advanced degrees is unlikely to have a strong effect on the growth rate."

They might be onto something!

I've seen very little correlation between education and intelligence. Where there is correlation, one must ask which is the cart and which is the horse. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Obviously someone with a 'degree' figured out that absurdity. But what the heck, it was good for a morning laugh. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

The study found that Miami has the lowest brainpower of any large community. Just 16 percent of Miami's adults have earned bachelor's degrees, which is 31 percentage points behind Seattle's rate.

Santa Ana and East Los Angeles -- both in California -- rank last in the other two categories. (Click Here (http://www.bizjournals.com/specials/pages/10.html) for more places with low brainpower scores.)

This is an example of elitism. "I have a college degree so that means I'm better than you and deserve privileges you don't deserve." So consequently "we're better than you are and we have the sheepskin to prove it."

Now if you don't have the degree, you can still join the club if you have enough money.

That's all this is. It's buffoonery at its most obvious. The best place to see such buffoonery in the wild is on daytime soap operas.

Robert, I'll go you one further. When looking at the ranking of the largest 53 cities there are small links underneath the chart to go from 1-10 to 21-30 and so on. Try the one for 41-50 and notice how it just reloads 31-40 over and over again.

The guys that made this site are either playing with people or belong on the list themselves. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif

Hint: When viewing 31-40 change the last part of the address at the top of your window from ...15.html to ....16.html to view 41-50, they have it linked right back to ....15.html. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

Could well be, Ron. A lot of the people I've worked with over the years came from there. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif This isn't to say that there are no smart people with degrees, only that the education / intelligence correlation is dubious at best.

Education, as we know it, is a sham.

Hmm...I'm not quite sure what your refering to Dave. The Somas(sp?) I'm talking about is a real stout muscle relaxent.

I'm just having a wonderful time. The other day I was exposed to meningitis so they slamed me with a mega-dose of Cipro. (that'll cure whatever ails you) Then I tried to play 19 y.o. by carrying TWO wildland hosepacks up the hillside.

Ok, I'm an idiot....

I asked Dave WX7B what he thought about all of this when he was here in Greenville, as we are not far from Charlotte. Based upon his calculations, Greenville rated rather well, but as the little city I live in is another 30 miles south of Greenville, he said that would qualify me as being profoundly retarded. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif

I live in Seattle and if this is the "smartest city," I'm in for a lifetime of continued disappointment.

I dunno if selecting smart cities by the number of college grads or colleges are in them is such an accurate measure. #Formal education is not always a measure of intelligence or of common sense.

I do think that the smartest folks I have met lived in Minneapolis, and that New Yorkers are not as smart as many of them think that they are. #I know it is very hard to generalize about smartness, because IQ tests prove nothing and you could also be a genius without being fluent in any one language...even the first one you were supposed to have learned.

Generally I think that the people of California are way ahead of all of us. # Most states voted for a governor who is a politician who learned how to be an actor. #The intelligent Californians voted for an actor who is still learning how to be a politician.

w2ilp (Intelligence Limits Politicians)...what they don't know may not hurt them at the polls but it may hurt us all at the pumps.

Are you sure that people in Seattle are smart?http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Maybe they were including people who were visiting from British Colombia, Canada. I do know that the American Indians in that part of the U.S. are smarter than the average American Indians.

Boeing is in Seattle..maybe that helps.

People in Seattle need to be smart in order to see things clearly through the fog that comes off the sound.

I thought you were referring to Orwell's pleasure drug, but I thought it was a loose reference to the thread topic and the modern World that I was too stupid to figure out. To me the modern Soma is reality TV! http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

In South Florida it is hard to find folks who DON'T have an MBA from the University of Miami. It really helps them in their lifetime careers as a busboy, cocktail waitress or taxi driver. Nobody ever graduates Florida Int'l. University or talks about it. Of course, admitting that you attended the University of Florida or Florida State will automatically get you classified as " Redneck". I remember that survey back in the 80's where 90% of UM graduates couldn't find Miami on a map. http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
