What a let down for a ten year old boy. Today was kids day on AO-51 so we went to our local hilltop for a directly overhead pass of AO-51. We tried several contacts but could not make it through the pile up of adults that were using the bird. What a total lack of respect! You guys suck. My boy waited all day for this perfect pass and was totally let down. Does anyone pay attention to the schedule or do you just not care.

Excuse me? Mark, I'm sorry to hear that your kid had a bad day with the bird. Really, I am. But why do I suck, or for that matter, anybody else here, when we had nothing to do with it? Don't you think that maybe your anger is just ever so slightly displaced?
After listening in on the birds when I first became licensed I decided not to fool around with them for the same reason that has you so upset. They are way to busy for me since I don't like the idea of trying to punch through a pile up.
So here's a suggestion. Teach your son morse code. Build a small 4-5 watt tranmitter, attach it to a handful of c-cell batteries or even a small solar panel and start making some contacts. Using code with something you built yourself can be just as exciting as anything else.
If you want to know where to get a DYI kit just ask. There are more than plenty of people around that are willing to help.
