Hi all:

I need some advice from those of you who might know what a good choice in the $250.00 and less range (new or used) . 2meter/70cm might be.

Im going to use it in my Jeep for communication between vehicles. I don't anticipate any search and rescue work just normal communications between vehicles and maybe an emergency call (hope not ..). Lots of memory presents not that important and remote mount not a big deal either.

Just looking for somthing that is rugged ,reliable, and easy to use.

Thanks in advance

For many radios this tone decoder will add $50 or more to the price of the radio, and in some cases, might not be available at all.

So long as both are licensed, I agree with RO. Personally I do not use any cross band stuff. I do not have a need.

Jsp500...Make sure you guys are both licensed to use any amatuer radio equitment. If you guys are I would check into the Kenwood Tm-V708 dual band radio that covers 2 meter and the 440 band. Thats the radio I use in my expedition and the radio works well for what I need it for. 73's And Good Luck! Harold and the KI4MBK Family!

What about the good old CB?(I know dirty letters here) I belong to a Jeep club and when on a run we tune to ch. 3. I carry my handheld Yaesu ft-60r for emergencies. For the $, don't think you can beat it #http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I can Commend the ICOM IC-E208 this is by far the easiest Rig I have evr had the pleasure of using good Power 55watts on 2m and 40watts on 70cms I had my fist QSO within 15minutes of the Box being opened and the cost around £212

Yaesu FT90, Kenwood TM-G707, (may have to look onlinf to find that at the price you want.) Both are excellent radios. Own both, and would not trade them.

Thanks for the advice so far. I still haven't bought a radio (other $ obligations ) but now im back on track.

I'm thinking about going w/ a FT- 60R or a IC-T7H HT for my 1st radio since I'll be able to use it more often (not just for the limited time I spend in my Jeep). When I am offroading what is a realistic distance I can expect to be able to tx/rx using a 1/4 wave external antena in desert areas ? 5W isn't alot when compaired to the moblie rigs 50W I know.

I ended up getting an FT-60 at HRO. It got good reviews, had a price tag that was in my budget. I've gotten about 1/2 way through the manual so far.... http://www.qrz.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Im sure I'll end up getting a mobile and use the HT as a back up at some point but for now I'm happy to have this one. Thanks for the help...

Good deal. Glad I could help out. Yeah, I'm looking for a new mobile and/or portable. At least a dual band. Still doing my homework on it though. If you need anything else feel free to IM me or ask on here
