HUNGARY. Effective 25 May, 2006 amateur radio regulations in Hungary have changed significantly, in many respects breaking with age-long traditions.

Key changes that also affect the international HAM community are as follows:

- ECC REC (05)06 on the "CEPT Novice Licence" is implemented. Foreign visitors holding a "CEPT Novice Licence" can now work in Hungary using HA/home call. The CEPT Novice licence grants access to 160m, 80m, 40m, 15m, 10m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm bands, with reduced power levels. Please look up rules before operating!

- Morse-code is no longer a requirement, VHF licencees can start using HF bands, without changing their HG callsigns. A 6 WPM Morse proficiency exam is still necessary to make CW QSOs , unless the CW QSO is between two computers.

- Geographic call area numbers no longer exist in callsigns.

- Callsign rules simplified, thus allowing for a wider choice of possibilities.

- A new, simplified entry level exam and licence will be introduced for youngsters and seniors later this year.

- Earlier licence levels consolidated into two: "CEPT Novice" and "CEPT". All existing licencees get more privileges with this change.
